Terrible performance! Please help...
« on: August 23, 2005, 12:45:44 am »
That\'s weird... The game runs terribly. While creating my character, I clicked on an option, than waited, than the screen flashed and then I had results - and I am speaking only of chosing a race, gender or just anything! The game itself runs even worse, at a speed of 1 frame per 5 seconds... What the hell?

My computer perhaps is not the best in the world, but I\'m sure it doesn\'t justify such bad performance: PIII 1000MHz, 512 MB SDRam, connection 128 kbps (through cable TV), graphic card: ATI RadeOn 9200 SE 128 MB. I\'m using Windows XP.

The weirdest thing is that the game seems to be running \"in the background\" - for example, the Windows bottom bar (the one which has the Start button etc.) doesn\'t disappear and is always present.

Please help...

Hmmm, I don\'t know what exactly causes your problem, but if I wanted to be cynical I would say: Windows XP ;)
(I\'m running PS client under Linux (Mandrake 10.1), my hardware is not better than yours (AMD Athlon 1333 MHz, 256 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 7200 with 32 MB), but there are only few places where my framerate constantly drops down to ca. 1-2 fps, e.g. the crowded Hydlaa plaza.)

But to be serious:

Did you enable full-screen mode?

But maybe you also have other programmes running in the background. You should exit them before starting PlaneShift.

Edit: You can try to disable sound in PS, this will speed up your performance a bit.

Knowledge is power, if you know how to apply it.

It\'s not the configuration... The SETUP ITSELF works terribly...

Do you have installed latest graphic card drivers?

Just be glad it runs at all...  :P  The most recent official Radeon drivers do not work with PlaneShift.  Go to Omega Drivers and get theirs.

I have latest drivers for an ATI mobility radeon 9700 and PS works just fine.
Maybe it depends also from other things? Anyway, the Omega drivers can be a solution.

It seems there might be a few cards that do work.  But the list of those that don\'t seems to outnumber those that do...  (lots o\' posts about this...)  :P And the mobile version is definitely one of them.

/me points at his laptop...

Many, many thanks guys...

I took the effort and checked if the latest drivers was what I really had, and lo and behold, I had some generic Windoze stuff... So I installed the latest Omega drivers following yuour advice and voila, it runs great...

Thanks much. See you in game, perhaps.
