Make mining more valuable
« on: August 25, 2005, 05:36:01 pm »
In my oppinion mining is a nice job - but can\'t there please please please be a NPC where you can sell Gold, Iron and other stuff except for Harnquist?
Cause the most annyoing and timeconsuming thing about mining is having to walk back all the way to Harnquist - inclusive a lot of loading time when you enter the city. :(
It\'s hard enough to get PP or money out of it, without all this travelling. And I think in \'reallife\' there would be a few Merchants camping around valuable mining places to buy and sell ore or minig tools...
I know there\'s a blacksmithing skill coming where you could use the iron but it will still take some time \'till it\'s implemented, and I think a NPC where you can trade would be implemented quite faster :)

yeah, but until then I think a NPC would make minig a bit easier and more fun - with a not timeconsuming simple to implement merchant :)

Actually I personally like the travelling back to Hydlaa bit about mining. I have a dwarven character whose sole occupation is mining since he has near to no fighting skill and only some very basic weapons for self defence. He prefers to make a living in a peaceful manner. If you can sell your ores directly after mining them it all gets rather boring though if you ask me. Mining itself is only good for so long and after digging up 20+ ores I \'m glad I can take a break for a trip to Harnquist.
Of course I can understand if you have a miner who can\'t quite carry such a load and has to return every time with 10 ores it gets a bit much .. so maybe if you just train your strength you need to make less frequent trips?

And I \'m also really looking forward to crafting and blacksmithing finally being available ... heck even simply being able to smelt and refine ores would be a major improvement. The ovens have stood there for so long.

Hmmm, at first sight it seems to be no problem, but if you think about a merchant near to the mining spot, there might be a problem as well.
Not only the merchant may camp around the mining places, even the players might use this to camp such places, because it is a lot easier to dig some ore, then walk a few steps to the merchant and return to the mining place just to start the whole thing again.
That\'s why I think it is OK having to walk back to Hydlaa. This will discourage such campers. ;)

What about asking someone to be a go-between? Make a trustworthy friend with some time on his or her hands, and have them stand half-way between your mine and the merchant. They will carry your ores to the merchant, sell them, and return the money to you (keeping a percentage for themselves, for their effort).

Fun, and functional.

i bounced that idea around in my head a couple of days ago. after i scraped the gunk off of it, i back burnered it until smelting, and maybe crafting, comes into effect. mostly because the tria yeilds are still too low for such a thing to work. except maybe on plat, and even then it may be a sub critical pay off. however, a miner\'s guild may have the organizational structure to pull such a thing off.

but, i\'m not worried about mine camping. the engine design seems to allow up to critical lag mass number of people to mine a given spot. and the mines don\'t need to respawn.

... misses his master crafted pick
