Fedora 3 problems: from install to run
« on: August 26, 2005, 06:47:40 pm »
Specs:
Nvidia Asus FX5200
Fedora Core 3
AMD Athlon box
1gig RAM
Not the fastest thing on the block.

*Hope this post is in the right place!

Hello - I thought I would try this game as I have never played an online RPG before. So far, I still haven\'t :)
It just won\'t run on Fedora Core 3.

I started with the PlaneShift_CBV0.3.010.run file and then ran the updater that came with that. After a night of downloading art and stuff (I guess) ./psclient would tell me I\'m using the wrong version.
I would see the screen come up, it would play some (pretty good) music and I could move the arrow around. But I could not get past that screen. Wrong Version.

So, I read the forums and find that I must get this file:
PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.linux.x86-UPDATE2.run
It immediately starts with errors about libcss and libcrypto.

I had to create symlinks called libcss.so.0 and libcrypto.so.0 from the libs that were already in /usr/lib anyway. Fine, it seems to fool it.

So, I run it again and it also goes online and does stuff for hours and hours (over 6 hours).
Finally, it says that completed okay.

Next, I run ./psclient and it flashes up and closes. It complains about not finding a ttf file in /fonts/ttf (which is a damn confusing path really as I found it\'s really looking for a font in planeshift/data/ttf ...) called DejaVuSans.ttf
I found this in another folder (by locate) and copied it into data/ttf and that error went away.

Now when I run ./psclient it flashes a window up and then it closes straight away.

The message on the terminal (see below) seems to indicate a problem with the Nvidia Kernel.

Now, I have done a \'yum check-update\' but there is no new Nvidia kernel available.

What should I do from this point?

Hoping to see this game sometime soon(ish)

Hi,
If you mean the file:
PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.linux.x86-UPDATE2.run
Then (as in my post) I have installed it.

I did remove all the files except art and then ran it and it did an update (6 hours of it - but this is perhaps because I\'m in South Africa!).

Well, the details are all in my OP.

If not, then could you point me to the right file?

Get the latest drivers package from http://www.nvidia.com, shutdown X server and install it.

Well, I hate to break the yum update cycle, but I am off to give the latest drivers a shot. Will report back here later.

Thx.

Okay!
It seems I should have the twit of the month award!

My Nvidia driver was messed-up and not working for anything 3D - Planeshift was no to blame.

So - I am finally in the game and I must say it\'s sumptuous!

Good stuff.
