Why don't you guys.....?
« on: August 27, 2005, 08:05:40 am »
Why don\'t you guys zip the PS file to make it smaller? I had to reformat my HD and i lost the install file, i went to download it again and it says it\'s going to take 6 hours   , What the hell is up with that?!
(?`?._.?[Mercwyn]?._.???)

Well, firstly the time estimation will be way off at the start of a download...secondly, download time is based on your connection and how many people are trying to download the same file at the same time. Try downloading from a different link or waiting a few hours.

First of all, Forum Requests is not the place for this.  This forum is for requests associated with the forum itself.  Not the game.

Secondly, I think it\'s safe to say the installer is already compressed.  Zipping a compressed file does nothing, but put it in a zip.  You can only compress so much.  The file isn\'t getting any smaller, sorry.

Torrents may work faster? Sometimes? I swear, they\'re great :)

Why don\'t you guy inform yourself before making assumptions that are unlikely at best? The installer file is a mere 250Mb, while the installed version is 360MB (not counting psclient.txt). What do you think creates the additional 100 MB? This means a compression ratio of ~1.44, which is pretty good considering that the entire art is already zipped and remains zipped when installed.

So... know what you\'re talking about before ranting.

Edit: also, it might be worthwile to consider not wiping files that you might need afterwards, anyway. Wasting download bandwidth should be made a capital offense.

Especially if you plan on ever uploading a .dmp file... the server won\'t accept any psclient.-txt > ~250KB. My solution, if I forgot to delete psclient.txt before (re)starting the client, is to look for the beginning of the most recent run, marked by \"======\" (search from the end of the file in reverse direction), and copy everything following it into a new file, which I then upload.

i\'ve been crashing too much...
maybe there should be an automatic delete everytime you update? just an idea.

This file doesn\'t grow when crashing. It grows while PS runs.
Anyway, I just automated deletion of psclient.txt upon launch of the client. Any dump that isn\'t uploaded by that time won\'t get uploaded, anyway, so no psclient.txt required, at least for me. YMMV

There was some excess debug info stored in that thing, until recently.  It ~should~ behave better.  I\'ve had a size cap request sitting on bugtracker for a while... this\'ll fix the rest of the problem, if anyone ever gets around to it.

It may behave better, but it still grows by 100KB each run. This means that you can\'t go three runs of PS and then upload psclient.txt to the dmp server. It\'s probably less of a space hog, though.

Mabye everytime you close the program normally it would reset the psclient.txt.. but not when it crashes, so you would only be updating the thing for the time it crashed. :D

PlaneShift never closes \"normally\"...  Have the thing open for a decent amount of time, and it\'s basically a vaguely controlled crash when you exit.  :P

del *.dmp
