I can actually play the game
« on: September 04, 2005, 10:19:44 am »
After all the posts about problems with the current Mac version of the client, I thought you might like to know that it sort of works on at least one Mac.
I downloaded the game yesterday, followed the instructions for updating using updater.jar, and then tried to play it after fiddling with the settings.

I did get the missing font error about DejaVuSans.ttf, although it doesn\'t stop the game from launching (I guess that font is no longer actually used or something.) I downloaded the font anyway and put it into data/ttf/ just to make myself feel better. The error doesn\'t show up any more.

When I play at the standard resolution of 1024*760 everything looks right until I reach the login menu, where the text is unreadable because each letter is replaced by a yellow square. Note that it did this before I fiddled with the fonts too, so that can\'t be the cause.
At 800*600 it gets messy. The background to every screen is covered with some sort of noise and mushed up versions of whatever is in the background behind PlaneShift. On the plus side, the text becomes readable (just, I really don\'t like that drop shadow), and the 3d elements such as the middle of the character creation screen, and the game itself, still work.
I created a character with only one crash, and started the game.
It hung just after I found out how to move.

My stats are:
Machine Model: iMac DVSE
CPU Type: PowerPC 750  (83.2)
CPU Speed: 400 MHz
Memory: 256 MB
Graphics: ATI ATY,Rage128VR
Bus: AGP
VRAM (Total): 8 MB

Yes, your specs are a bit low. The game crashes a lot anyway, and lower specs only exacerbate the problem. Good to know you got it working, though.

Yeah I was just surprised that it worked in spite of my stats AND the fact it\'s buggy at the moment anyway.

I suspect it may have some problem with NVIDIA graphics cards. My friend has an iBook (ATI) and an eMac (NVIDIA) and the game only runs on the iBook.

You mean you want it to run faster? Search! (I\'ll give you a hint... \"Adaptive distancing\").

What is the minimum adaptive distance one can set.  I have mine down to 60.
Maybe I will try lower to see what happens.

Also you (ChaOs) said on another theme that the loot bug was fixed and there is a need for a new build.    Can I do an update and get the bug fix or do we have to wait for the build?

Is there any Mac out there that runs smoothy.   I am looking at the top model Imac for future purchase.   I believe it has 128 Mb VRAM and 2.0 MHz.

That\'d run pretty well. And no, there are no binaries in which the bug is fixed. You have to wait for the new build. ;)

also try texture downsampling, which you can select through the pssetup application if it is working.
Code: [Select]

It\'s slow but functional on a Nvidia Geforce2MX based implementation, with OS 10.2.8.  Not sure what breaks in 10.3.9 or 10.4, they might be trying something fancy.

Thanks,
Daniel

PS. Getting it work with a Rage128 is actually insane.

I don\'t think it\'s OS 10.3/10.4 that\'s mucking things up. I\'ve run PS fine on both. I think it has to be specific graphics cards or perhaps some other unknown bug...

I can now loot without crashing and sell my loot to a merchant without crashing.
I downloaded 0.3.011 from the PS website and updated using Updater, pssetup worked for the first time and the used psclient.    ALL it took was getting an new imac G5!     My system is now Mac OS 10.4.2 with 2 GHz PowerPC G5, 1 GB DDR SDRAM  and 128 MB VRAM.    Now all I have to do is pay for this new computer.

I tried earlier on a 2cpu G5 machine with some nVidia GF 5200 card and  OS X 10.3.9.
It did not work but it might have been fixed for this one by the later builds.
The G5 iMacs I saw had the same graphics, just only one cpu.

Also there are people with GF4MX who can run Planeshift but I cannot run it on  a card that is named the same.

Weird.

Yeah it is pretty weird. I can\'t find a common link between those getting errors. And even if it runs with a GF4MX, doesn\'t mean it runs right. I have this and can get in game, but can\'t do much but walk around and talk. Most other actions will immediately crash my game.
