who is in map command
« on: September 06, 2005, 11:47:06 pm »
basically an extention of the /online, or whichever it is i use the shortcut menu, command. something that would tell you who is on your current map.

i guess for the why... i will make it easier to find places it hunt. you will know how many yliaki are there and make the decision to hunt or continue on. yeah a weak why, but it is really the best i can come up with to satisfy the rule.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

Kind of... completely OOC, isn\'t it? You\'re supposed to roleplay hunts... Travel to your destination, check the situation, then decide whether the competition is too high and leave, or try your luck.

I say nay.

See, the problem here is that I keep reading posts and forming responses to the original point or question, only to find that Karyuu has already posted, and said the same thing I was about to say.  I don\'t want to look like an idiot by repeatedly posting \"Uhh, yeah... what she said\", but it\'s really starting to get a bit unnerving.

Karyuu, STOP STEALING MY BRAINWAVES!!!

Thanks.  I feel much better now.

It is a good ooc function to have though.  For one it will help evenly disperse players who choose to use it (i.e. the people many \'rp\'ers complain about regularily around here).

I say if it increases someone\'s enjoyment of the game without nessecarily reducing the enjoyment of others (the supposed \'majority\') then go for it. (Even though I personally follow Karyuu\'s philosophy as well.)

But this actually might reduce the enjoyment of others - imagine someone hunting another player, abusing this \"feature\" to find him/her. There\'ld be no IG reason for the hunter to know he has to look for in this or that area, yet with this command he\'d be able to know.

Don\'t type, just post telepathically through her.  ;)
It\'s a surprisingly effective method...

Instead of giving such types of people what they want (more spawns to camp with minimum work), how about we try to have them gradually change their ways to something more RP-suitable?

The argument you propose isn\'t solid. The same can be made about OOC chat: It will help \"evenly disperse\" OOC conversations away from the eyes of the RolePlayers, but it also sanctifies OOC chat, something we do not want to have happening. We do not want to sanctify the use of any OOC command for anything that -should- be roleplayed, such as hunting.

Perhaps a better IC way to do something completely non similar at all would be to have meeting landmarks... places that are obvious from a distance, say stalagmites.  make sure its known IC and ingame that people often meet there to go adventuring.  People could hang out there making it easy to get groups together. and it wouldn\'t take any new coding, just community awareness and perhaps some website info.

There are, of course, examples of how the option could be mis-used, but then again, you can say that for most options that make a game interesting. The idea is that it can be used towards the betterment of fun. (I support OOC chat as well for this same reason.)

I definitely agree that we should try to convert the world to the roleplaying side in anyway possible though.

I guess I\'m thinking about it like I think about drinking.

[imo]

We want people to drink responsibly. Some people suggest having a high drinking age (certain functions are only available to GMs or are not available at all), but does that make people responsible (make them good rpers)?

I say no. My approach is to lower/remove the drinking age (allow these functions) and to promote responsible drinking (good rping) through good parenting (\'making it worth it\'). And for those that don\'t? Go ahead, just don\'t let your irresponsibility (poor rp) affect other people (ooc griefing) or there\'ll be consequences (GM/AI wrath).

My position here is that we should,

a. Be tolerant of other\'s fun whenever possible, even if we don\'t understand/agree with it.

b. Avoid withholding options when what we really want is their responsible (rp) use.

I fail to see what RP use that command/feature would have :)
