Please Help!!!!
« on: September 14, 2005, 02:56:41 am »
Every time I try updating or start the game it goes to a DOS prompt like its going to do somthing and then the computer restarts.  I meet all the requirements to play and am using Windows XP home.  If anyone could help it would be appreciated.

Hmmm... Well the DOS thing means it is TRYING to work... but i dont know why your computer would restart... Try exiting out of any programs that are not necessities... like any messengers or game programs like Steam or Wild Tangent... Maybe WinZip if you have it... Pretty much try to free up as much CPU Usage as you can... because PS takes a lot...

Every program is closed except for a firewall (which I use with every other high CPU demanding game) and it still just restarts the computer.  I\'ve never encountered anything like this before so any tips will help.

Oh... well definately leave up your firewall... um... does your video card have a setting/program that you might have closed... disabling its full potential disallowing it to run PS? other than that there isnt much i could suggest...

Try running the updater in \"recover mode\".  (click the link for it in the start menu, or add -auto to the end of the updater\'s command)

Well that didnt work either, just a bunch of \"cant find so and so\" and \"updating this and that.\"  I\'m going to uninstall, and redownload from a different mirror since the bittorrent wont work for me.  I\'m also going to try to install to the defualt directory.  Keep the ideas coming.

try running windoweed, smaller res, 16bit color

try running in compatibility for windowes 95 98 200 etc

try running it for 256 colours

try fixing your computer :\\

you might be one of those unlucky soles that it just doesnt want to work on, i say might, its rare that happens

Well I uninstalled and downloaded from mirror 2, reinstalled to default directory and still no luck.... I\'ll try switching res and such and see if that helps... keep the ideas coming.

And when doing recover update, is it normal for this to come up?  (if I can keep up with it)
Warning: Cant find paths for win or mac or linux updater application (server only)
Critical files  <> not found (server only)
Notify: psUpdaterEngine initialized.
Downloading registry...
Couldnt delete temporary repository zip (/this/updatertemp/repos.zip)
Loaded registry
Server has another updater, going to fetch it..
updater updating to another build

then the computer restarts

yeah thats all normal, seems it kill\'s your computer when it tries to start downloading the files, maybe you need to alter your firewall slightly? :\\ im not an expert on this though

No, the new files download fine.  It does the 0%....25%... etc.  Sorry I forgot to add that in there, but anyways even after the downloads the computer restarts, when I get back to my home computer I\'ll try running the game on that but for the sake of knowing please keep the ideas coming, this is really driving me crazy not knowing the anwser.

I\'m out of clues, this seems to be more of a techy problem i have no idea about, you\'ll be lucky to grab a dev on a spare moment and figure it out, but yes, do try on your home pc

updating crashing your computer  8o  That\'s defiantely unusual. All it does is download files, and move them around a little. Sounds like you have some other problems with your computer. Can you do the usual gambit of virus scanning, updates, defragmenting, dusting, etc? It\'s sounding quite a bit like faulty hardware, or atleast drivers.
