Need help editing the "sources.list" file in Debian
« on: September 18, 2005, 04:12:28 pm »
For some reason I can\'t get \"apt-get\" to run from websites.
The code is something like this:

deb http://packages.debian.org/stable/

I did that for the for a few package locations, and all of them came back as errors with i tried to apt-get a file that was not on my install disks. (this works fine with files that are on the install disks)

Or maby it\'s a problem with the file I\'m trying to apt-get. It\'s an mplayer plugin for Mozilla, and can be found here: http://packages.debian.org/stable/misc/mozilla-mplayer

Can someone explain what I am doing wrong? Or better yet, can someone post the insides of their own sources.list file?

Q: How many Planeshifters does it take to expalin a simple concept to a newb?
A: Six. Five to argue on who\'s explanation is right, and Moogie to lock the thread.

Even though fken has already responded, since I\'ve grown detached from these forums, I might as well say what I want and I have been dying to say it for a long time:

It never ceases to amaze me that after months of posting such inquiries on a forum for those who share a common interest in a MMORPG, you continue to treat the off-topic board like some kind of newbie-oriented Linux tech support newsgroup.  While I as well as others might respect that you are trying to learn about Linux and programming under that family of operating systems on your own, there are other message boards and newsgroups for that kind of thing.

Perhaps if you had only posted such requests for help once or twice in your time here as a registered user it would not have been quite as glaring, but given the sheer volume of posts with correlative topics it is beginning to seem more than a little out of place on a board dedicated to a video game.  Albeit that it\'s an open source video game, and a pretty good one at that, but that does not mean that the general population of forum-goers is any more tech-savvy than those on other forums dedicated to popular open source projects.

With topics such as \"ZoMgPwnZ0RBbQ!111!!one!!!1elleven!!!!!\", \"the WAZZA thread\", and \"I can do art too XD\" to name a few, one would think it could easily be inferred that this is not the place for dealing with serious questions about information technology.  And yet you still post such questions, often resulting in few, if any accurate responses - let alone helpful ones.

I seriously wonder if you create such threads for want of attention rather than an actual appeal for help.  To appear interested in such matters might indeed increase your chances of getting noticed in a community where a great many people worship \"the penguin\" and cast down \"M$\" so it is logical to frequently make known to others that you are trying to learn of these things on your own which would make you ?1337.?  Why bother finding a new accepting community that can definately help you with your problems when there is one right in your cache that might possibly on a good day throw you a bone, am I right?  Even if only a few of the users can be of help, at least it\'ll make my user name look good.

Though this frame of thought is understandable, in the end it is detrimental to any real attempts at self-education due to the slow response of those with an authoritative grasp on the matters in question.  Even then, your queries might not be answered as completely as necessary and thus the cycle would begin again, with the thread dying and making its way onto the second page before you know it.

In summary ? why do you post tech help questions here?  Yes, there are some people who know about Linux and some people who know about C++ and maybe some of them are involved with the PlaneShift development team, but does that mean they will always help you with every little random problem you seem to encounter with some obscure piece of hardware you\'ve had for five years or some weird piece of code you\'re trying to understand?

No.

So instead of spamming the off-topic forum with at least one new thread per day about your current technologically oriented problem, why not take such questions to a real tech help board instead of the ?Look at this funny flash movie I found today!? section of the forums for a video game?

*exhales loudly*
Damn, that felt good.
