client killer - out of bounds positional data error
« on: September 20, 2005, 03:21:19 pm »
Forgive me if this is a duplicate, but I searched and couldn\'t find one...

At several points in Kada-El\'s tavern, if I try to proceed, I suddenly get a continuous string of repeated messages:
>Received out of bounds positional data, resetting your position
>Moving back to valid position in sector DR01....

Then the volume of my client suddenly elevates to blaringly loud, the graphics freeze, and the cursor leaves arrow trails all over the screen. I can send tells, and I can /unstick, but I can\'t move.

However if I /unstick twice to send myself to the death area, the graphics screen is still broken and I still can\'t move (and it\'s pitch black). So I\'m forced to quit and reload to fix it.

Two places I\'ve noticed it are:
- the stairs up from the ground floor.
- on the balcony at the back of the tavern, one floor up, if I try to jump over the rail to the other section of balcony on the right hand side of the tavern (which apparently has a door in). I only got to this balcony in the first place by jumping up from outside... apparently normal players can get there via the stairs.

No other players I know have noticed this bug, so I\'m wondering if it\'s Mac-specific. Are other people with the Mac client experiencing this?

Cheers

Running on Mac too. Having experienced none of the described problems.

Just checking... are you running the new 0.3.11 client that was released a week or so back? :) That\'s what I\'m using anyway. Unless it\'s something weird to do with Klyros...

Cool. Did you get the new version of the client from the website as well (about 288 MB)? If you just updated from the old version using the updater app, it says it\'s 0.3.11, but it\'s really not.

Hrmm... Try updating again and if that doesn\'t help, reinstalling. If it persists, could you post a console log and crash log? (see sticky at the top of the forum).

Thanks Cha0s. The client was already updated as much as it could be. I even wiped and reinstalled it.

I did further testing today and it appears it\'s a Klyros problem. I created another race and I was ok.

It has to be related to the problem reported in:
http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=14721&boardid=33&sid=4d65f1d44b598d432329551f21c5952d

However, Windows users just get some weird movement problems. They don\'t seem to suffer the nastier side effects that wreck the client. I haven\'t spoken to any other Klyros using the Mac client yet, to confirm it\'s not just me. Could anyone reading this please try out a Klyros and see if they experience it?

The general bug is reported on bugtracker as bug 188. Maybe I should add a comment there about my problems? Or maybe it requires its own bug?

cheers!

Go ahead and add a comment to the existing bug. Make sure to list this bug in the User Specs thread as well!

Using a Klyros and got the same glitch in a different place; see my Floating topic for details on mine.

Hrmm... Wain, had you used /fly at all? That might be the culprit...

No, I hadn\'t used flying.

I\'ve used flying successfully quite a few times (although it never makes me float up to the top of the screen like BonzaiRob reports... I just get a lame little \"hop\" of a few feet).

But I hadn\'t used fly in the log ins when I got the \"out of bounds\" error. I even created a brand new virginal Klyros character just to ensure it wasn\'t just my regular one.

I think it\'s just something about the Klyros design that is registering collision detection where it shouldn\'t... As if it thinks I\'m too big to go further up the stairwell, and when I force the issue it registers part of me as being outside the room?

I\'ve noticed at least 2-3 other staircases where I have trouble going up as a Klyros, though I\'ve never managed to get the \"out of bounds\" error on them. The rest are all in the death area, and I can\'t see the stairs there, due to that lack of texture bug.

I think the stairs have a texture. Try running PS from the Terminal with either a -relight or a -nolightmapping (see the guide for a little app that does this for you if you aren\'t comfortable running PS from the Terminal).

Thanks :) I did that, and it was nice to see the Death Realm as it\'s supposed to be!

Unfortunately, the whole relight thing quickly turned into a nightmare. Since that\'s a different issue, I won\'t go into it further here, and have posted a new thread about it.

Cheers
