User System Specs Discussion
« on: September 21, 2005, 03:18:49 am »
Firstly, I\'m issuing a call for everyone that has not posted their Mac system specs in the sticky at the top of the forum to do so now.

Secondly, I\'m opening this thread to discuss the specs, any patterns you might see, any ideas you might have as to why certain configurations work and others don\'t. Right now, the idea is that nVIDIA cards combined with OS 10.3.x are the culprit (perhaps there was a driver update in 10.4.x?). If anyone can confirm/disprove this, please post your thoughts here.

The main reason for this thread is to let you, the PS Mac community, help us out in the bug-fixing process. Hopefully, we can gather enough information to sort this bug out quickly, but we need your help!

Again, if you have not posted your specs, please do so. Remember to keep them up to date as well. Thanks!

Also, I have seen a few post that they had problems, but finally got an update that fixed everything. So if you cannot play, please try the updater. And if the updater doesn\'t work, try Cha0s\' updater. And if that doesn\'t work... erm, I dunno :P

I would like to get a good list of what bugs effect every mac user, and what effects some people under some situations. Mac specific issues will likely need to be dealt with by DFryer or Cha0s who actually have macs, or the CrystalSpace people who don\'t and cause random problems :P But bigger issues I will try to look at from a general perspective.

Do people get that? That could be major, I\'ll have to ask others later what that even means :P

For those that don\'t know, stfrn is a helpful dev who has taken a particular interest to the Mac problems (which I thank him for). If he has any questions, please answer him as best you can. Thanks!

One thing I might suggest would be worth adding to the user specs: what level of privileges the user has on their computer. Most will be admin level, but occasionally you may find someone with a secondary, limited account.

I know from debugging Firefox issues in the past, that certain errors will arise only when someone has lower privs, and it can take ages before anyone realizes that that\'s the reason why. While I\'m not a Mac developer, and don\'t know for certain, I suspect that Planeshift could be even more prone to this, since it currently stores prefs in the Applications folder, rather than the user\'s Library. Worth keeping track of, anyway. :)

PS keeps prefs in the folder where you installed it.

So if you did install it you should be able to change the prefs.

And I guess that OS X allows running GL applications to non-priviledged users. But who knows ..
Observer .. or watcher?

Yes, at the moment, we assume only admins can play PS. I think it just won\'t work otherwise. ;)

Now, other things to discuss:
Klyros flight
This is buggy in general and not Mac-specific that I know. For now, just don\'t /fly ;)

Crashing/Issues with Dialog boxes
Anyone with an nVIDIA graphics card and 10.3 will not be able to play the game (until dfryer and I fix it). Anyone with an nVIDIA graphics card and 10.4 will be able to play but with the crashes from opening almost any window (looting seems to be a big one). Everyone else should be fine. Thanks to everyone who posted specs for helping to confirm this!

Yes, this person gets this. Frequently. And, yes it seems major to me (as it means ps will crash and tie up my mac resources while everything sorts itself out)
