R4 patch - segfaults.
« Reply #60 on: December 01, 2005, 10:09:45 am »
Hi,

I have downloaded the R4 \'patch\', which provides updater.bin and psclient.bin.

The updater seems to run fine.

When attempting to run the client (via gui), nothing appears to happen.

./psclient from within a terminal provides a single line error output

:~$ cd planeshift/
:~/planeshift$ ./psclient
Segmentation fault

gcc 4.02-1

Woohoo! :D

So far R4 updated, setup works, and it runs.

Thanks, Xordan! Hey! you even found a workaround for the aRts problem :D

...erm, it\'s only a bit funny that I get Venge\'s username and password ...but that might be an issue that\'s not connected. I just hope Venge\'s character didn\'t get hacked :(

Nah, that\'s the default dummy user for cvs. It won\'t work on laanx, only on a cvs server.

can't execute binary?
« Reply #64 on: December 02, 2005, 07:39:33 am »
Type: Bug

Description: I\'ve downloaded the new installer and was able to run it, but when i get to the part where i\'m supposed to run the updater, i get this:

./updater: line 5: /planeshift/updater.bin: cannot execute binary file
./updater: line 5: /planeshift/updater.bin: Success

the same happens when i try to run the pssetup and psclient respectively.  How can I fix this?

Your system specs: ubuntu 5.10

That\'s strange. This kind of errors usually appear, when You try to execute a file, which has invalid format.
Do the following:
file ./updater.bin

You should see something like this:
updater.bin: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

If You can\'t see \"ELF 32-bit LSB executable\" it means, that your files may be corrupt. Redownload and reinstall.

Also: The first slash in the path bothers me (I mean : /planeshift/updater.bin), is that file really in /planeshift folder ?

You would also get that error if you downloaded and tried to use the amd64 binaries on a x86 system I think.

new psclient dont start
« Reply #67 on: December 03, 2005, 04:04:51 pm »
I use  ubuntu hoary
-updater is working
-But psclient fails and do not even start

in realese r4 size psclient.bin is only 875,5 KO
and in r3 psclient.bin it was 11.4 MO

There is download problem on planshift server
Check fill size and extraction after download.

PlaneShift-CBV0.3.0.12-r4-i686.tar.bz2
file must be 6.3Mb

Installer Bug(s)
« Reply #68 on: December 07, 2005, 09:53:06 am »
Type: Bug

Description:
The installer description is VERY misleading.

You might like to point out one VITAL piece of info....

These are NOT installers.  They are UPDATES!

This is very unclear in the forums.

In order to INSTALL, you need to:

Download and run PlaneShift_CBV0.3.011.linux.x86-2.run
THEN download and run PlaneShift_CBV0.3.012P-r2.i686.bin
THEN download PlaneShift-CBV0.3.0.12-r4-i686.tar.bz2
Extract that last file to the install directory.
And FINALLY run update

In order to figure this out, I had to make the mistake of thinking that rc2 was the installer, waste a couple hours trying to figure out where it put the art directory, etc, etc... and then realise I didn\'t even have the actual installer.

An update on the Linux section of the download page would have saved me a buttload of work and frustration.

Obligatory System Specs:
Athlon XP 2200+
512MB DDR RAM
nVidia GeForce 5200 w/ 256MB
Mandrake 10.1 (Official) for i586
Linux Kernel 2.6.8.1-25mdk
KDE 3.2.3-17.7.101mdk

Actually, it is the installer. You don\'t _need_ to get the one off the website. A ./updater.bin -auto would get you all the art and data needed. From next update(next few weeks) it will have art packaged with it as well. So I\'m not changing the description as I\'ll have to change it back again. :)

Hi all,

In regards to my earlier posts concerning the R4 patch.

Not sure why this occured but a number of attempts to download the packages, I only got two files in the archive.

Within less than a day of my previous post I got all three files and have been up and running.

I am a little befuddled as to what happened,  nevermind all fixed now.

Thankyou Xordan, for you efforts in providing updates for Linux, and sorry for not having got back to you sooner.

Cheers.

cracked it!

running fedora core 4, I followed  iarwain\'s instructions and all was going well - until I got errors about openal:

/psclient.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libopenal.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

though it was present in the libs directory - after picking about in psclient.bin I found these lines:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=libs/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
exec ./psclient.bin \"$@\"

so I ran them from a terminal and bingo!

out of interest, what permissions should be set on psclient and other files in my planeshift directory? they\'re all currently owned by me..

thanks everyone for their help.

Permissions should be whatever you want. Just make sure you have read and execute, and maybe write permissions.

Hmm...that\'s strange...

I\'ve been trying to get R4 to work on my Gentoo system for a few days now.  It annoyed me that it seems I have to have arts installed (meaning I must install QT also) to play.  I use ALSA and esd (stanalone Enlightenment 17)

....If someone could help me out, that would be great.  I really don\'t want to compile system libraries that I don\'t use.

I\'m using Ubuntu Breezy on a Pentium IV.

I\'m installing Planeshift and updating for the first time. But the updater seems a bit strange...

I don\'t mind much because it is updating the game, but you can\'t say it\'s normal ;)
