In the Tavern
« on: September 26, 2005, 12:28:24 pm »
It is great to have a tavern in game but they are usually one of the hubs of the community and this one isn\'t. Unless someone organises a gathering it is usually dead.

1 Until we can actually sit down there should be fewer tables so we have more space to gather in.

2 There should be an NPC behind the bar actually selling drinks and food. There are already mugs in game so this can\'t be difficult to implement.

3 I would like to see one or two NPCs in there with whom one can play chess, dominoes or something. (Back to the game within a game idea, but not cards, although it could be fun to be able to play poker with other players (I wonder about the complexity of the programming)).

4 Janner would like to see \"serving wenches\", I said I couldn\'t say that but how about players doing stints at serving drinks could be a good way for newbies to earn some tria.

I would love to be able to walk in there at any time and find it buzzing with activity and chatter about all sorts, just like a real pub. :D

But since the chef was kidnapped, it has changed.. Everybody has left.

Not everybody. Maanar is there as often as he can. And still, there is some crowd rather often, e.g. for parties and celebrations.

The chef kidnapped??? He was there (upstairs) last time I looked. He buys mushrooms.

Gag, it is great when a crowd gathers in there but wouldn\'t it be better if there was always lots of activity. Having stuff to do in there would attract people to use it more. Maanar and others could be kept really busy then!

I suggest serving wenches as that is what they would have been called in the times of old , no disrespect intended ladies :)

there was things like this back when i was new... like march time, the tavern used to get quite busy. also im guessing that it would have been a great place to hang out before my time.
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

Don\'t take this the wrong way but I don\'t think this should be a wish addressed at the Devs. This is something the players themselves control and should fix. All the things you suggested, except for the minigames, can be provided by players and should be provided by players.

Why put a NPC that sells food behind the bar if you can get some food yourself and hop behind there?

Maybe do like me on occasion ... if you are gathered at the plaza with a lot of friends suggest that you all go to the tavern. Usually people will follow and someone will soon take over the role of barkeep.

Definitely agree with Zan on this one. It would be horribly boring with NPCs taking the bartender/serving girls/cleaners roles. There are so many wonderful people who take over and make things interesting, Maanar being the first to come to mind. This is what us players are here for, to populate the world and entertain each other. Many people have planned activities in the tavern before, such as storytelling events, and crowds often gather regardless of time or plans. The tavern may be empty for a few minutes, but then I find that it always fills up later, anyway.

People have no real business there. What if their hp, mana, stamina would regenerate twice faster in the tavern? Or you would even get +10% stamina e.g. if you buy a drink and stay for some time?

I always thought that taverns were more perilous for health than anything else. What with all the drunkards... :P Implementing HP/MP/stamina gains isn\'t too realistic, I would think. There\'s no real reason for you to feel invigorated or refreshed the second you step into a tavern. That should come only if you /sit, probably ;) And then, too, there is no real reason to feel more invigorated or refreshed by sitting in the tavern than anywhere else.

There could be special drinks \"served\" there and only there to draw a crowd, but then you have to take into consideration what kind of crowd it will draw...

The devs could relocate the bar to a more convenient part of town, i.e. right off the plaza.

It would become an instant hangout.

It \'s not like the bar is far away and why does everything need to be centered around the plaza? What makes it so special aside from the usual load of new players wandering around?

That last one is my reason for keeping the tavern away from the plaza by the way. Not many things are more disrupting to a good conversation or even roleplay than another new person asking help. Don\'t  get me wrong, I don\'t mind helping new players at all most of the time but sometimes it can disturb things.

The plaza is special because it is centrally located.

Close to the arena entrance, close to the blacksmith, close to the temple, close to the library neighbourhood, close to one of the sewer entrances, close to several trainers.

If I\'m coming into town, I almost have to pass thru the plaza to get to any of the interesting parts of town.

There\'s a conflict between having a popular bar and an exclusive bar.

Maybe we need 2 bars, a populist dive next to the tavern and keep the existing bar for people who don\'t want to mix with the rabble.

How the tavern could be more perilous than sewers infested with rats? And that\'s what most people do on Fridays don\'t they? They go to a pub and get drunk and go to sleep and feel refreshed and ready for the next week. If you want it more realistic you can pay the innkeeper for a (night) stay. This could be a couple of hours in ps world time. There should be a balance between \'realistic\' and \'playable\'. Btw staying in the inn could be better alternatrive to a bathroom stall for those afk:)

Great, so instead of populating the tavern with exciting people, we\'re going to invite AFKers? :|
