Client locking
« on: September 30, 2005, 09:40:10 am »
Before anyone says anything I know that I have posted about this problem before and I have asked on #planeshift and I have searched the forum :)

Am currently using Platyna\'s last release have reinstalled it 5 times in the last week or so have also tried xordan\'s new installer but that Segfaults just before entering the game

System
Asus A7V8X
AMD 2500
1GB Ram + 1GB SWAP
250GB sata WD Caviar
MSI/Nvidia FX5600 ultra
**2mb ADSL

SuSe Linux 9.3pro KDE
latest nvidia 7676 driver (updated to try and cure this problem)

Full description from start
problems started about a fortnight ago but thought it was network lag, then at the end of last week the client started locking momentarily 5-10 seconds at a time, this has gradually got worse and worse until now I can get maybe 10 minutes to move/chat every half hour and it now affect any other progs running (Chat, firefox etc)

While locked top shows continually changing CPU/MEM %\'s from 30-50%cpu and up to 90%mem and one or the other of the following messages scroll rapidly through the terminal, KDE\'s system guard show maxed out CPU/ram plus half the swap!

*** Input Buffer Full! Dropping packet of type 13! (and types 115, 49 and 28 but mostly 13)

Got DR message for unknown entity (various numbers I\'m at work and can\'t remember exact numbers)

Sorry for the long post but if anyone could point me in the right direction I\'ll give you a mushroom in game :)

regards
John, Hokinon, Lanser or whatever

**Edits
Some things that I have tried

updated graphics driver
-nolightmapping
Full screen/windowed (different sizes)
a lighter window manager (Fluxbox, enlightenment and WindowMaker)
sound on and off
Crying, Shouting, Swearing, general ranting \'n\' raveing, kicked the cat and the dog (twice), drunk loads of beer (but just fell over), tried to kick the other dog but couldn\'t catch her and am now counting my pennies to see if an upgrade is affordable.

**@Seytra Thanks for the suggestion Have just run glxgears and am getting over 400fps full screen, checked graphics drivers unloaded/reloaded 3d enabled

An update first since the change to the forum this post is now in the wrong section as all this happens in game.

Second my son also plays ps at the weekend on this PC but his own user account and separate Planeshift install, since logging on Friday night he has had NO problems apart from a bit of server lag whilst in combat.

Of course as soon as I found out about this  I su\'d and copied his entire ps directory into my /home/DIR and logged in, since using his install I have had no locking apart form the same combat lag.

The only thing that may have been different between installs is I probably updated more recently than him, so whilst my current problem is over if anyone could shed any light on the issue?

Or even a spam spam \" I don\'t know whats wrong but try updating your graphics driver\" :)

But is this new (or old I guess) version you yoinked from your son still 0.3.011? And did the lockings start just after an update you did?

If it wasn\'t some sort of hardware problem, then it seems unlikely that it would start happening on it\'s own without changing something. Maybe you could try updating again to see if the previous one was just \"bad\"? At least you know you\'ve got a backup somewhere :)

Wait, did you not say that you reinstalled PS 5 times? Would this not mean that anything you might have updated / changed would have been removed? So unless your son used an older installer there must have been another reason for that...
Maybe you should try to install using both his installer and the one you used into separate directories and see if there is a problem in one of them.

The net lag is due to the performance problems fragnetics is having ATM, everyone has them (it also affects movement but that\'s less noticable).

Yup updated as soon as I realised the problem was just me not everyone else online at that time then re-ran platyna\'s installer into a new directory then tried xordans each time in to a new directory wasn\'t until almost a week later when my son was here that I found out his install was \"ok\" but I am sure that I used the same installer/updater to update both installs after the wipe and as I cant find the original 0.3.011 file in his account will not be able to compare but i will compare my original with his :)
