"Police" Groups/Guilds
« on: October 04, 2005, 05:49:19 am »
Are there any official guilds, or unofficial groups of players, that act as police for in-character quarrels? Or that \"patrol\" areas and help out little Timmy, \"Mr. Powice Person, that big mean Tesufang is right down the stairs in the sewers an\' I can\'t cowect rat tails to sell to the hobo in a dragon suit can you make it go to sweep for me?\"
(I used to dread that Tesufang whilst hunting for precious rat tails... Maybe it liked my shampoo?)

If there are groups that uphold a noble ideal of \"keeping the peace\" (despite thieves and warlocks wandering about freely) and I haven\'t noticed your valiant efforts, I\'m sorry ^^; (Pst, could you watch Kada El\'s for drunkards?)

I also wonder how a guild with the intent of acting as a police force would be recieved by GMs. They would be like a militia, without official powers. Would there be too much confusion between who roleplays keepers of the peace and who actually keeps it?
\"No I don\'t, I have gray eyes!\"
\"What? Let me see that character sheet!\"

Well, Monketh\'s \"Hydlaa Law Enforcement\" tried to do just this. However, didn\'t get too far  :( You are certainly welcome to try for yourself, and for what it\'s worth I\'d encourage you to try.

There used to be the Hydlaa Law Enforcement.  A guild of one, he attempted to arrest me after I made the mistake of committing several murders.... in front of witnesses.  Of course, I just killed him half a dozen times before he gave up.

There aren\'t any really good alternatives.  There are specific invididuals in the game who I\'ve learned to trust, but every guild has it\'s own agenda.  ESPECIALLY to protect their own and to make their guild more powerful, more knowledgeable, etc.

What\'s worse is what if an evil guild set up a law enforcement guild for the purpose of controlling the courts?  heh heh heh

The problem is that at this point such an idea is simply not feasible, given the state of the game.  The current game rules are not set up to permit player-based law enforcement (or NPC-based, for that matter), so the only way this is possible is through RP.

Now, there are quite a few people in the game who would probably we willing to go along with this, and allow their characters to be arrested and tried for their crimes.  But all it really takes is one person who doesn\'t want to \"play along\" in order for the whole thing to fall apart.

Open PVP would actually make the idea feasible.  But it brings with it a bunch of other problems.
