Strange painting found - please help!
« on: October 04, 2005, 10:39:56 am »
Dear Hydlaa citizen,

while roaming through the city once again, I found a strange soaked and partly rotten scribbling behind the tavern. It seems far from being completed, just like a discarded draft. Can anyone imagine what it would become, if the artist had been able to complete it?!

Unknown draft picture - removed due to complaints

It\'s an unfinished map of the sewers, with each area colour coded.

Seems very possible, indeed.

Do you think the artist had ever finished his work? Or may he be a victim of the Fanatics down there?! ...

Eh.. If the artist did, I\'d be borrowing a copy from him/her.

AFAICS, you are on thin ice here. This isn\'t finished, but it still is against the \"no public posting of maps, etc.\" rule.
Also, this would belong into the RP section if it is intended as RP, it doesn\'t strike me as fanart.

What? Maps are not allowed? Then I must have misunderstood everything - Always when I read a question \"Is there a map?\", then I find the answer \"They do not yet exist, but will be provided by fans as soon as someone finds the time to make one.\" I never ever read \"Creating maps is strictly forbidden\".

But please forgive me, that I don\'t know the whole board with \"193184 Posts in 17218 Threads\", being a member for only one month now.

Don\'t take any notice, Gag, some of these GMs get too big for their own boots. I don\'t see any buttons to push for rules, either on the forum or on the main website. Perhaps Seytra could help us by posting a link to this rule.

I think it looks great, you have obviously put alot of work into it.

ive never seen that response. maybe the suggestion that players make their own but not share through the whole community.
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

Sorry, my mistake, I thought from the officious tone that Seytra was at least a GM.

Perhaps you can clear up this matter of the \"no public posting of maps\" rule. Where is it written? Seriously, I did a search and the only post found was the one in this thread from Seytra.

Guys, I think the term \"maps\" here is being used too generally.  Let me just outline the 2 types of maps that you guys are trying to lump into 1:

1: General Game Maps - These would include overall, very general maps such as cutaway maps of the planet to help describe the location of the labrynths in relation to Hydlaa and that other cavern city...  It would also include general maps of the world (you know, where the most specific it gets is pointing out cities).  Game companies have no problem producing these and often employ artists specifically for this.  These are mainly intended to immerse the player in the world and give them an overall idea of the game world.

2: Spoiler Maps - These maps focus on one specific area and often point out features such as monsters, uber loots, etc.  That would include this map.  No game company likes these.  These are intended mainly to give players unfair advantages.  There is no reason you can\'t make them for yourself (you\'ve obviously discovered it, so you have every right to make yourself a map) but those shouldn\'t be shared with others.

In my opinion, a secret map is a more unfair advantage than an open available one.

And I remember that the developers of \"Gothic\" were proud of members providing maps -- but I konw, this community is \"different\".

If you insist, I will remove this picture above.

I may be wrong, but tour guides would need maps: and what\'s the point of having an explorers guild if they don\'t make maps?
Also, selling maps IG would not be illigal, would it? Since that is a fairly lucritive profession and I don\'t see how it would break the continuity of the game.
Unless spawns, character locations, item locations and the sort were pinpointed it would not really matter to much, just keep people from getting lost.
If all that stuff were in the map then...well...for shame.
But I\'ve never seen a game without some form of maps, even if they just look like this.

d=door
s=stair

:) oh the mudding memmories. :)

I happen to agree with XpYtZ, for what it\'s worth. This isn\'t a spoiler map in the sense that everything worthy of notice or value is shown. Heck, people used to zoom out, take a screenshot, then share it with each other as a map. All you get is a general sense of the area.

So unless someone on the higher up list decides otherwise, you shouldn\'t have too many problems with this image at this time.

However, I do agree with Seytra in the sense that it doesn\'t strike me as true fan-art work. I wish I could look at the map again to recall how you presented it, but unless it looked really authentic and map-like (instead of colored rectanges on a canvas-textured background), it may have been iffy in this section.

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

getting lost is one of the best things to ever do in a game, just run around what seems like forever, see tons of things oyu probably wouldnt manage to find ever again, and finally, see something you recognise dart towards it and find a fantastic view looking down where you can see your house.

it seems \'adventurers\' are losing their sense of adventure, requesting maps, and to be shown everywhere, I feel sorry for the explorers, it looks like they wont be picking up any recruits anytime soon :\\
