Yes, and that is really really really bad. You should have seen something like:

PING laanx.fragnetics.com (203.81.44.229): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 203.81.44.229: icmp_seq=0 ttl=46 time=286.603 ms
64 bytes from 203.81.44.229: icmp_seq=1 ttl=46 time=276.798 ms
64 bytes from 203.81.44.229: icmp_seq=2 ttl=46 time=283.556 ms
64 bytes from 203.81.44.229: icmp_seq=3 ttl=46 time=314.715 ms
64 bytes from 203.81.44.229: icmp_seq=4 ttl=46 time=267.527 ms

--- laanx.fragnetics.com ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 267.527/285.840/314.715/15.854 ms

Note that in your post, all of the packets were sent, but none came back. Something is blocking incoming packets on certain ports. Do you have a hardware firewall (may be built-in to some routers)? Is there anything else that could be blocking ports? If it isn\'t already, try hooking your computer directly to the source of the internet (Cable/DSL modem, etc). If that works, we know the problem is somewhere between the computer and the internet (a router, firewall, etc).

Now how do I check for those sort of things? And how do I disable them??I\'m not sure I understand what you mean about connecting into the source, I believe I\'m plugged in directly to the source..

I\'m in a college dorm, but I know that they don\'t have any firewalls because we bring our own computers, I do not believe we have a hardware firewall here.

If you are in a college dorm, you are almost certainly behind a hardware firewall put up by the college (where the data leaves campus via the college\'s T3/OC3, etc line). In this case, your best bet is to contact the system administrator and ask that he/she allow incoming from laanx.fragnetics.com data on the port Planeshift uses (which I\'ve forgotten at the moment, though I\'m sure a quick search or question in IRC will yield it). Otherwise, I don\'t think there\'s any hope.

I have checked with one of my resident advisors about opening the port on the network firewall, so hopefully it should run as soon as they open it up. If anymore problems arise, I will post them here. Thanks again for dealing with my problems Cha0s...You\'ll probably hear from me again.

Hopefully on a more positive note.

If you are on a Mac, you don\'t need to worry about viruses for the moment. No hacks, spyware, trojans etc.

don\'t have zonealarm......or anything like it besides my snitch program. how can I make it let me dial out to P.S.? (I apologize for repeating myself)

Perhaps you have some restrictions in your network, are you trying to play from a School computer, collage campus or something?

[EDIT] i just read the last posts... seams like you do....we found the problem!

I really should read all the posts before answering  ^_^;;

No problem....

Still haven\'t got back to me, but they should be opening it soon. I\'ve been patiently waiting for about two weeks now. Hopefully I\'ll get my chance.

Hello again guys.........New problem.

The Network guys here have told me that they aren\'t opening any new ports....I don\'t know what to do...... Do you guys have other ports that you can run the game on for people in my situation? A friend of mine told me to ask you guys about problem running things on schools networks, assuming you\'ve dealt with this sort of thing before.

The issue is not with Planeshift, but the college. The campus firewall is probably disallowing all traffic except to certain ports (HTTP and maybe FTP). If the server can\'t send anything to you, you can\'t play. My only suggestion is to get to be really good friends with the network administrator. :(

Sorry we couldn\'t help. I\'m sure if you get the network admin some chocolate and maybe slip him/her a 20, you can get that port open. :D

I\'m no expert on the topic, but it might be possible, if you have a friend outside the university who Knows His (or Her) Stuff, to set up some forwarding scheme where you connect to him via port 80, and all traffic is then forwarded to fragnetics, but this is pretty susceptible to breakage and might contravene university network policy.

I think someone mentioned that traffic going over port 80 wouldn\'t work very well. I forget the exact reasoning, but it apparently would be very slow. I tmight work, though you\'d need someone who\'s really good at gimicking port forwarding. And then of course you\'d have to get PS to connect to your server on your port (which actually isn\'t that hard).

You don\'t need to forward any ports unless you\'re behind a firewall. In that case, you need to tell the firewall to allow connections on port 7777 from laanx.fragnetics.com.
