How about an option on the log in screen to reload the last 5 minutes  (or even the whole section) of the chat log, this would help me keep track of conversations and rp after a crash/relog

Not sure I understood... You mean you want the last five minutes of the chat to show up when you log into the game?
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Not realistic.... crashes and relogs can be RP-justified as taking a nap, being knocked out, teleporting home, etc etc.  But missing things which are said while you aren\'t around is important to the RP aspect of things.

yup just taken out of in my case Hokinon_Korere_chat.txt several times when i\'ve crashed others have had to remind me what has happened during a fast unscripted rp session

/guild, /tell /group /auction /help are also not realistic and a crash can not always be RP-justified so in order to keep the flow, I just mean what is in your chat window when you crash, no extra info since logs are kept clientside it would be hard to see what was said while logged off anyway

I did misunderstand :D I thought you meant that logs of what you -missed- during a crash should show up, not what you already previously saw. No idea how do-able this is, but.. a crash doesn\'t really take out your memory with it.... :) I find that I can remember what happened rather well. It\'s what I -missed- that tends to be important.

Totally realistic. There are no bugs, no crashes and no other defects ingame from an IC POV. There is no teleportation, and you do not just fall asleep when you crash. These things have absolutely no RP reason, no RP justification and thus no RP impact: they don\'t exist IC. Thusly, this isn\'t just not an important thing, it is very bad for RP, as it is completely unrealistic. Technically, there are no log outs either, and these are not properly dealt with by saying one just pops into another dimension or teleports home or somesuch. Either you walk off or announce to RP sleep (for convenience only), or you agree to postpone and continue later where you left off (which would be the right way but can be impractical due to continuity problems introduced by it).

I agree that most of what happened before the crash is likely recalled, except for those things that arrived immediately before which you might not have had the time to read yet, or if you need to refer very closely to a specific sentence.

Should not be too hard to add a loading of the last few logged lines to the game AFAICS, though I agree with Karyuu in that the missing parts are the really important ones.

Well, when you crash you\'ve to wait 30 seconds till the server readmits you. So there\'s a time when for the rest of people you\'re there, while you infact aren\'t. I personally use those 30 seconds to open the chat log and see the last lines that it has while I try to reconnect. Once in, the ones you were rp with know that you crashed, so, if something was said that needs to be known for further comprehension of the conversation it can be stated ooc or with a tell.
Personally, I don\'t see the reason of such an option, since you can open the log and search what you missed. Making a script to do so, would represent understanding the text lines, and comparing it to the desired time that you want to recover, I don\'t know if the effort is worth it.
As for the missed text, I think it can\'t be solved by code, if the packets are still UDP (and they should be like this) there\'s no point the server knows which chat text you missed or not, so, as always, the best ones to complete the missing information are the sorrounding players.
Since we all crash now and then, we must kindly help each other to don\'t miss the storyline.
