PC gladiatorial tourney?
« on: October 19, 2005, 05:06:38 am »
Has anyone ever organized a gladiatorial event with PCs?

We\'ve got this awesome arena, with a couple of empty fighting pits and lots of room for spectators.

(tangent - hats off to whoever designed the arena)

Question - Is there any point to having prizes? Anyone strong enough to win the tourney doesn\'t need cash, or any items I have to offer.

Question - does anyone know how they organize betting on horse races or basketball games or whatever?

Question - would any GM(s) like to participate in this, to referee and discipline any cheaters?

/me braces himself for the inevitable RP -vs- PL flamewar

theres been a few events, nothing that drew a crowd really, over then festival of the hunt, by Zan and his team

PC dueling isn\'t all that fun, its just who can hit \'bloody attack\' the quickest perhaps prizes should be given to the people who get beaten the most ^^

Dueling is definitely 1-shot-1-kill, but there is skill involved with the timing etc.

I\'m also wondering if a boxing event would be fun, but you\'d have to ban potions etc. and I don\'t know how you\'d enforce that.

We tried something a little different ( I think ) once, and seemed quite popular with the contestants.  It was originally started during the week before the last wipe, so the turnout was not huge, but everyone seemed to have fun.  Unfortunately we haven\'t had the time to start up again...yet.

Here is the thread advertising it at the time.

So I believe that some form of this is can be enjoyed by many people.

Dueling has become a game of glitch or be killed... There is no point in it anymore.

Rapidly changing stances while waiting for the opponent to approach you will make it where you attack as soon as he comes up to you.

If you stand right next to eachother in the beginning, there is a glitch to attack right away.

So dueling is pointless... theres no timing skill anymore... its all glitch now.

Just ask Mitaki and Shalmaneser....

Like Keyaz said I\'ve organised tournaments in the Festival before, they were actually quite entertaining as long as both warriors were on semi-equal foot skillwise.

Now I hear you all about dueling being more a matter of luck than skill with these uber weapons. This is why I decided to ban the use of any weapon stronger than the normal store bought equipment from my next tournaments. I think this will make it fun again and people won\'t be able to kill the other with one hit so quickly. Of course I am counting on some GM help to make sure our contenders obey the rules.

For the prizes, you are right trias are a bit pointless so I\'d rather have rare equipment being given as a prize but those aren\'t easy to obtain. Either way the fun is on the first place and the prize is usually just a little boost.

I haven\'t got a clue about the betting stuff though.

I like the idea of a hand to hand torney as there is a bit more of a fight involved should make a better spectical.

Glitch?  Last time I checked the way of ensuring that you get first hit isnt a glitch, just a method of attacking.  Its not like its a bug or something, so stop implying that they are cheating.  Rapidly changes stances doesnt actually do anything in Players vs Player (unless its changed).  Thats just a side effect- what you happen to see.

When you rapidly press it, you have a chance to attack first, and it allows for attacking at multiple times. Also the first hit in a duel is a glitch because it doesn\'t use the rules of weapon speed. It totally bypasses it and attacks on acception.

I know this because I have been dueling for a long time. Unless you start at a distance you can be guild by that glitch. Even if using daggers and the other person with shortswords.

Rapidly pressing attack makes it were you cannot approach the person. Alls you can do is stand back and uses the arrow spell. Keep running. You know how annoying that gets. Especially if the other person uses healing pots. Then the battle can last hours. I am not willing to fight in a 2 hour battle. I will Yield before that.
