Play this game, and then.....

And then you\'ll stop complaining about the graphics in planeshift.

This is the demo to Daggerfall, the prequel to Marrowind and sequel to Arena.  The actual game is a lot better than the demo since you can get outside into cities and taverns and the wilderness, but the demo is interesting if you\'ve never played the game before.

If you get in game, make sure to change the controls to your liking.  Attack by holding down the right mouse button then moving the mouse to swing the weapon.

It\'s weird, because sometimes I feel like the graphics in Planeshift are almost ~too~ good.  When I\'m constantly assaulted by really cartoony or low-fi artwork, whether it be Arena or Outlaws or Hugo\'s House of Horrors, eventually I get past it and it\'s not longer really ~there~.  I get into it.  With planeshift, I\'m being spoiled.

Wasn\'t Daggerfall released on 1996?

I have no complains about the graphics in Planeshift, but it is unfair to compare Planeshift to a game that was developed 10 years ago.

Planeshift can be compared to Morrowind, which was released on 2002. Some graphics are better in Morrowind, others are better in Planeshift. In this comparison these two games are quite equal.

Oblivion (should be released before the end of this year) seems to bring the game graphics to a completely new level.

Holy crap, I thought that was a photo...
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

It\'s obviously not a photo... but it is photo-realism... and that\'s 3D too?  So the tree is built like an actual tree?

It looks like not too complicated 3D models with really really nice textures.  Those trees... the sky.... that\'s pretty sweet.  I\'d love to see some of the NPCs and enemies from it!

Edit:  After checking out additional screen shots, I\'m not as enthused.  The monsters remind me of system shock 2.... and a lot of the environments which aren\'t of trees and nature aren\'t as striking either.  It\'s great, really good, but the nature shots are really the best things to look at.  I don\'t know how it could be done better though, so who am I to talk?

Here is a NPC for you (from the 20 min. in game video). The voice in the background says that you can kill him and eat the meat  ;(

I would hope that hunting isn\'t one\'s sole source of sustenance?  Anyway, the first time I played daggerfall it was still the 90\'s, and half life is still cutting edge to me.  The nature scenes in oblivion are amazing, but there\'s still something about the animals and monsters which....

With all these games, I\'m distracted by the attempt at photo realism.  It looks realistic, but not quite, and I\'m distracted by the attempt.  With crappy games, they don\'t look real at all, so I\'m not distracted, so I get into it, so I don\'t care that the graphics are crappy.  It\'s hard to explain I guess.

What I\'d love to see is for the in-game playing of a game to have movie-realism in terms of graphics.  If you\'ve played warcraft rein of chaos, I mean like the cut scenes at the ends of the quests.  If you can make a game which looks like that all the time, then that would be amazing.  Is there anyone out there right now with that kind of thing in mind?  With that kind of thing as a goal?

Marrowind... that\'s cute. :) I love the TES series. Morrowind\'s mod-ability definitely gave it extra years of playability. I hope Oblivion is just as open.

It will be, they have already announced an editor like morrowind had, plus you can use the game physics in the editor to do cool stuff :D

As for the original topic, comparing ps to a game created 10 years ago is well, mean :P arena was pretty good for it\'s time. As far as gameplay went, I would say it\'s better than ps (/me waits for lighning... :D) It was very inventive and drew you into the game.

As for the realism in the screens, well, that\'s about as good as it\'s going to get till we start getting some 1gb vid cards and 5ghz cpus... And it isn\'t like it\'s that bad at all, I think you are just being a little to critical.
Warning: Prone to common sense.

How was Marrowind?  Daggerfall never stopped being adictive for me, but it did start to get awfully repetitive.
