Should I start playing?
« on: October 25, 2005, 08:53:12 pm »
I am currently updating the game but I have no idea if I should start playing right away.

Why is that?

\'All character data will be wiped some time..\'

I don\'t ask when this is going to take place but what sense does it make for me to start playing when everything is going to be deleted again?

What sense does it make for you to start playing even if there will be no wipe?

And there will be many wipes after that one too. So don\'t think your character will be safe if you wait for this to happen.

yes, you should start playing. start playing and never stop.

the wipe will be soon(tm). but, don\'t let that worry you. there are several hundred people who are playing, knowing that the wipe will come some day. play the game, enjoy it. the wipe is like death. if you live in fear of him, you enjoy nothing.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

You can meet some nice people in the game, make some friends, create a background story for your character, learn about the game and the history of Yliakum.

Nobody can wipe this, regardless how hard they will try  8)

PLAY PLAY PLAY
Once you like it, even if there are wipes, you\'ll always come back for more...

Exactly. When you start playing PS, you start playing for the RolePlay, not the levels (well, at least that\'s the was it\'s intended to be, and the only worthwile one). Levels mean close to nothing. Good RP, OTOH, does mean a lot. And as has been said, RP cannot be erased, as it isn\'t stored in the database, but in the minds of the other RPers. Therefore, the only thing wipes do is offset your levels from what you RP, but that doesn\'t really matter. If you RP someone who likes doing what is already implemented (sadly mostly fighting yet) then you\'ll be back where you were before quickly. If you RP someone who does not yet implemented things, then it won\'t really matter anyway.

Summarising: if you are into RP or wish to give it a try, then starting to play now is just as good a time as any other. If you are into levels, then likewise, any other time is just as bad as now, and in this case you should pass up on PS entirely, for your and our mutual benefit.

It\'s entirely up to you.

The pwipe is also an easy way to get my 15,000 Tria back that I managed to spend in a day.

But if you\'re trained enough you can get 15.000 trias in just 10-20 minutes ;)

But if you prefer to RP you won\'t have those kind of levels.

That sentence is such an absurd on so many levels...
If fighting wasn\'t meant to be part of role-playing, it would never appear in role-playing games.

Gladiator/Warlock/Knight/Rogue/Huntsman/Barbarian. So many types of characters that would do quite a bit of fighting...

Well, the wipe is such a... mysterious thing. ;)
You will never know when it happens (even the devs might not now it), you just know that it happens \"soon\". But therefore you have to know the PlaneShift definition of \"soon\", it is quite different from the usual one. Soon can mean something like within the next three weeks or (more likely) within the next few months. ;)
Hence, start playing, your levels will be save for quite a while, if that is what you care about.

Knowledge is power, if you know how to apply it.

No Draklar, Zanzibar is right.

When you role up your character and find that your strength is 23, you\'re supposed to roleplay him/her that way.  You know you should sit around the fountain beggin\' a copper.  You\'re not \'sposed to roleplay any self improvement.

\"Run!!! It\'s a rat!!!\"

\"Oh wait, my endurance is so low I\'m out of stamina...  So tired...  Must rest...\"

Rat eats Draklar.

Fun huh?

I\'ve searched around, and I believe there was a wipe in September.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Hi

A wipe is usually accompanied by game updates, bringing in new skills, items, functions and alike. :) Though we try to minimize the number of wipes, they unfortunately can not be completely avoided at this point of the development.

The developers also have a way to reward dedicated tester-players. (eg. Ring of Past) Your efforts are appreciated.

PS. I like the way steuben put it: \"The wipe is like death. If you live in fear of him, you enjoy nothing.\"
