0.3.012 - lockups
« on: October 26, 2005, 03:00:15 am »
Type: Bug

Description: Soon after entering the world, my entire machine locks up.  Sometimes it happens immediately, sometimes it lets me walk around for a few minutes.  Once it happens, I get no cursor movement, no keyboard response (not even the LEDs for caps/num lock).  I continue to hear the background music until the file ends, after which I hear wind every now and then.

This last time, I did it in a window, running it -verbose from konsole.  It forced a relight of several maps, which took a while.  It then locked up with the following displayed in konsole:

Code: [Select]

My comp also froze yesterday although the game window was still active and rendering the game. The music was also still played, but I didn\'t get any errors. Just when I spotted the Teffy in the sewers my Linux went *boom*.
Your errors indicate that your data/gui/interact.xml is damaged or empty, maybe even missing.

I renamed interact.xml, ran update, and it downloaded a file identical to the old one.

I ran psclient again, with stdout and stderr piped to files (zipped here if they\'ll help narrow anything down); the stdout file ended with the same text as I\'d seen in the konsole window previously.  Hopefully there wasn\'t more that didn\'t get flushed to disk, as I had to hard-reboot.

For a while, because it was completely unusable, I switched to playing PS on my Windows machine -- and have had quite a few game lockups in the same spot (coming down from the windowless tower towards the plaza).  If I get out of that area -- for example, on the path to the magic shop -- it runs fine under Linux again (actually, better than fine; my Linux machine has maybe 1/3 of the horsepower of my Windows machine, but its framerates are about 2/3 of what I get under Windows -- impressive!).

Now, under Windows, when it locks up, I can just click outside the game window and can get to Task Manager in order to kill psclient.  But my Linux machine freezes completely; \"Runaway Process Catcher\" doesn\'t do the trick either.  Anyone know a way I can kill psclient when this happens, without hard-rebooting?

I press ++ and login on the console. Then I run ps a, look for the process ID of psclient and kill it with kill .

The keyboard becomes completely unresponsive when it locks up; none of the Ctrl-Alt-Fx keys work.  (It was the second or third thing I tried.)  :)

Even the Caps/Num/Scroll lock LEDs don\'t change state when I press their associated keys.

if your kernel is compiled with sysrq-key-support (default debian-kernels are), you can press \"AltGr\"+\"Print Screen\"(aka SysRq)+\"R\" to get keyboard-control back. if even that doesn\'t work, you are in trouble ;)

Looks like I\'m in trouble.   :(

Even though the video, mouse and keyboard lock up entirely, things are still going on (I can see from my XP box that the server is still running -- though I can\'t connect to it at the moment due to an apparent version incompatibility -- and I\'ve discovered that I can ssh to the machine so I can at least reboot it properly).

I managed to teleport to the new Death Realm and run all the way through it, without a lockup.  Took the exit, respawned back in the NPC room, and bam! Locked up after about five seconds.  Of course, I can\'t teleport on the official server, but I killed myself, ran through the DR there just fine, spawned back in hydlaa_plaza, rotated left about five degrees... and locked up.

I suspect the problem may be my video card (Radeon 7200).  I\'ll go buy a cheap NVidia card and see if that fixes it.  But I wonder why I\'ve got no problem in the Death Realm; it just doesn\'t make sense.

Edit: One minor weirdness -- if I\'m running psclient in a window rather than fullscreen, and the cursor is outside the window when it locks up, I can move the cursor all around the screen, though clicking on other windows has no effect.  Weird.

Looks like the problem was the video card after all.

I put in a GeForce FX 5500, and the lockups went away.  I do get a \"hitch\" every couple of seconds, but only when I\'m moving.  But I\'ll take that over a lockup any day!

Frame rates are pretty good, though I notice the third-person camera\'s collision detection has a few glitches that I don\'t see in the Windows client.
