Alternative Guilds
« on: October 29, 2005, 09:01:43 am »
I had the idea today to start a Bankers and/or Merchants Guild.

I think it could be very usefull. The ranks could range from Pack Rat to Miser and would be based on wealth. Thier goals would be to amass great wealth and a successful trading business. The members would have to consist of the higher classes, politicians, and royalty; no common folk.

They could also provide the service of holding money/items for other characters who are in need of such service.

So, I was wondering, would a guild of this type be allowed? There must be room for alternative guilds right? not all guilds neccessarily have to be involved in the fight for good and evil. There could be a blacksmiths guild, a miners guild, cartographers guild, etc. for people who choose to pursue these profesions rather than fight, but still want to belong to something.

If this belongs in another forum please move it. I thought this would be the most appropriate place for it though.

But this is exactly what guilds are supposed to be! :) It\'s not necessarily a struggle for some good or evil - guilds are groups of artisans, crafters, blacksmiths, merchants, bankers, traders, potters, etc. This is a medieval fantasy, afterall ;)

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

If you plan on starting one, good luck. I don\'t think any real guild ever survived in time. There\'s just too little people to join them.
I think guilds and clans should be seperated so that people could belong to the clans (most of the guilds we have now) and yet join the actual guilds to progress in their respective craft.

Oh, my mistake I guess. I\'ve never played another MMORPG, the only reference I have for my concept of guilds is PS, which, sadly, it seems only has fighters(good and bad) guilds.

Oh, and I agree with Draklar, we should have clans and guilds

/me cant wait to join the blacksmiths guild

/me grows old waiting

There are many guilds which do not have fighting as their main goal. Before the Bloodclaw broke, it was a guild of builders/merchants, I believe. Arcane Order isn\'t about fighting, and neither are the Explorers, nor is Community of Vaalnor ;) And what of the Knowledge Seekers? Guilds that yearn for a struggle between greater forces are far more common, but not the only kind, definitely.

I do hope you manage to create a merchant guild...we\'ve haven\'t seen one since Bloodclaw Inc. disolved...
Though apparantly, most merchant guilds tend to disappear in a short while...
If you do manage to succeed...I hope you the greatest luck in continuing the guild!

I think that we all would like to see true \"Guilds\" in the game.  The problem is not that no one wants them, or even that no one wants to take the time to start one.

The problem is that the game, at this stage of development, doesn\'t really support such a thing.  There is no crafting, no player-based economy, nothing to support a merchant guild.

The Community of Vaalnor is making a good effort, and seems to be having some amount of success.  I would suggest that you contact Valbrandr or someone else in CoV, and see if perhaps you can work with them.  I think at this point it would be much more effective to work in conjunction with an \"established\" group than trying to start a parallel project.  There simply isn\'t enough infrastructure in place to support competition at this stage of the game.

A guild based on a craft is one i immediately have respect for.

Swords of Ghent is not _based_ of craft, but we do have a whole section dedicated to the crafts and various arts.

I say, if you decide to make a guild like that, go for it, otherwise keep looking at guilds and their websites.. i would think a few at least have a place for the merchant type.

As far as i know, there is already The Miners Guild. At least i saw them online recently.
And there are few merchants already in game. You could try to unite them.
