Post History
« on: October 29, 2005, 09:15:25 am »
Can we get a post history in the profile of each member, or at the very least in our own profile?

A lot of other forums give you the option to see your post history. It\'s very convenient when you want to follow-up on threads you\'ve posted in. I try to follow certain threads and follow-up on everything I post, but as it is I have to use the search tool to bring up a history of posts which is very inconvenient.

You can mark threads as your favorites, or \"watch\" them for new replies - and I believe there is an option for you to get an email reminder whenever someone makes a new post within those threads. Have you tried looking through your user control panel, accessible through the \"Profile\" button on top?

Yeah, I know I can watch threads, but I dont neccessarily want to watch every thread I post in, even though I may want to come back to it later.

also, with post histories I could look at my own or someone else\'s post history, just incase I want to keep myself informed of every word that comes from the keyboard of Karyuu for example.

You don\'t have to subscribe to every thread you post in, I believe. Have you checked exactly?

If you want to search for every new post from a certain poster, you\'ll just have to use the search tool. It\'s not difficult at all, and certainly gives exact results in this case.

*sigh*

I think we\'re running around in circles here.

When I said \"I dont neccessarily want to watch every thread I post in\" I didnt mean to imply that the \"watch thread\" tool would force me to subscribe to every thread i post in.

What I meant is: I could very likely post in 100 different threads, of those 100 I might care enough about 5 of them to actually warrant adding them to my watched list. The other 95 threads I really dont care much about, however, I would still like a list of those 95 threads so that I can follow-up on them if I choose to do so.

What you are suggesting could be compared to your \"Favorites\" in Internet Explorer replacing the \"History\" feature of Internet explorer. Both the Favorites and the History features have thier specific uses, but niether of them can replace the other. In the case of our beloved boards:

Favorites = Watched List
and
History = [NULL]

Sure we don\'t NEED a post History, but you dont NEED your IE History either. It is a convenience.

It is a convenience that i would like to have, and a feature that I have seen in many different BBS systems. I was simply suggesting that, if possible, we could have a similar feature here.

Karyuu, we love you, but it seems like you\'re always so negative :) lighten up a bit

What you want already exists.  (as Karyuu was trying to point out)  Click the search button at the top of the forums, and search using \"Search for Username\" with your username.  It will list all your (and only your) posts.  Specify a forum section to get... er... more specific.  :P

Alternatively, you can just click on the search button that appears on every post (between edit and report) this will bring up all of the posts for that user.  For yourself, you can find one of the posts you made and do this, or on the main page with the list of connected users at the bottom, you can click on your name to see your profile and hit the search button at the bottom of that page.

Gladly, if I think I\'m truly being negative :) I\'m not. I\'m simply pointing out that adding a \"History\" tool seems superfluous. And it seems that I\'m not the only one to think so.

Post History already exists, I\'ve used it hundreds of times. Search for posts by Username doesn\'t actually work at all, but clicking the Search button in a user\'s posts does.

As you can see, I am familiar with the search feature. (gimme a little credit, im not retarded)

However, thanks to Ghostslayer, and Moogie for pointing out that the  button next to each post will bring up the users post history. This is helpfull and slightly more convenient than searching by username. I also noticed that the very same button is at the bottom of a each user profile, which also brings up the the post history for that user.

I think that most people when they see that button assume its a link to the forums page, not a link to a users post history. I wonder if it would make more sense to rename this button in the user profile screen so that it says \"post history\" \"user history\" or \"view this user\'s posts\" something a little more descriptive than \"search\"

I know, I know,  \"a rose by any other name\" blah blah blah...

If changing it is not an option, maybe we could send out a Public Service Announcement informing others of this closely guarded secret.

Anyway, I guess I\'ll stop trying to save to world and just be happy knowing what the button really does.

also, one of the  mods could delete this thread now... after all, we wouldnt want others to find out, right?

One last thing,
Karyuu, i was speaking more in general than I was specifically refering to this thread. However, after looking at your post history ;) I can see that your posts in general arent as negative as I once thought.

Typing search works just fine, thanks.

It messes with alignment.

I mean the process of having to move my eyes slightly upward to be able to read the word search and then back down again to continue to read is disconcerting.
