I have a question for you

There were three guys going to eat at a restaurant. They each ordered a meal for $10, after their meals the bill came to $30, but they didnt really like the food, so they complained and the Manager said he would take $5 off their total bill.

Since they couldnt split up $5 even.. they agreed to each take a dollar off their meal, making their meal cost $9. Thats $9 times 3 people is 27$, and they give the other 2 dollars from the 5 to the waiter. where did the extra dollar go?


I have the answer, Although because it was told to me after hours without a solution, I dont quite understand why.

If you get the answer.. would you explain.

The wrong way is calculating 30-3+2=29.

The right way is calculating 30-3-2=25.

$30 bill - $5 discount= $25 total bill

$2 tip +$25 = $27 divided by 3 = $9 each person paid

they paid $9 instead of $10 making the difference of 1.

But why does it not come out properly when I say: Each payed $9, 9x3=27.   now they give the waiter $2,  27+2=29

Why is there and extra dollar when the problem is done this way?

No.  The $2 given to the waiter is included in the $27.

It\'s like this:
They\'re going to pay $30 for a meal. They get a $5 discount. If they divided this up evenly, they\'d each pay $8.33. They decided this was too messy, so they instead only took $3 of the discount. In other words, they were paying $27. At this point, however, they decided that they didn\'t want the restaurant to get the $2 because of the bad food, so instead of letting the restaurant take it, they gave it to the waiter.

In summary:
$30 price - $5 discount = 25$
$2 of the discount go to the waiter since the three people actually only take $3 of discount (to avoid messiness). The three people each pocket $1 from the discount and pay $9 dollars each (total of $27), $25 of which goes to the restaurant, $2 of which goes to the waiter. Good?

Couldn\'t be the case. The waiter is the one serving them and you give tips if you get good service. If they didn\'t like the service, the waiter is the last person they should be giving it to.

Not liking the food is not the same thing as not liking the service.
