Server Speed
« on: November 27, 2002, 06:09:19 am »
As this is a game that relies on a centralized server, I cannot help but wonder if this will turn out like another Diablo 2, in which the server lags, and the moderators have little control over hacks.

I have two questions:

1. Are the current servers fast enough to easily handle the player load?

2. And, are there any plans to upgrade the servers via donations, or perhaps even having a free server and a pay server, with no difference in the game other than server speed?

Thanks,
Enum

I\'m sure it will lag and mods will not have control.

Donations, yes from the loyal players, but no paying.

1. Link is right that this is nothing like Diablo.  I wouldn\'t worry about that.
2. Right now we don\'t really know what the server capacity is going to be, in terms of how many players we can support at one time.  I can tell you that with Atomic Blue, with 10 people online at once, our server was at <2% utilization.
3. The goal is to not have any money ever enter the equation, but to rely on donations of equipment and bandwidth rather than cash.

Is the server also open-source?? so i could compile and play with friends on a lan, or maybe create my own \"shard\"?

Yes the server is also opensource.  You can download it and set it up however you want.  There are a couple of things with this though.

1) You would be sorta defeating the purpose of the MMORPG by only playing with a few people

2) You most likely will not be able to gain access to the database and the \'story-information\', dialogs, quest information, etc stored there. So it would be a lot of work to create your own.

The idea behind making it open source is so that other people can create their own games off of it and not try to create many shards or clones of PlaneShift.

But the people that doesn\'t live on US will be lagged as hell, so it could be a good idea to open alternative server in other countries, in my country theres a gamiing site wich, i think, could host the game when it\'s finished
