Strange network/forum (?) problem.
« on: November 16, 2005, 11:38:17 pm »
Hello,
I\'ve a strange problem with the forums : when i access it \"normally\", sometimes i\'ll get a normal page and sometimes it\'ll only lead to a timeout.
The main page is usually easy to get but from there it\'s nearly impossible to choose a forum or a thread without a timeout.
The really strange part is when i use something like anonymouse.org, i have no problems at all, leading to two hypothesis :
- the forum doesn\'t like my French IP adress
or
- The Internet like to eat packets at random as long they are mine and go to here. :P

here\'s the result from a traceroute (just in case) :
Code: [Select]
traceroute www.planeshift3d.com
traceroute to www.planeshift3d.com (65.212.166.34), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets

I don\'t expect a solution to this problem (i can\'t even think of a possible explanation)  but if others encounter it, it\'ll be known and a somewhat usable workaround is here.

(i made a quick search about this problem on the forums and i didn\'t see a previous thread about it but if it was already known and resolved, you may delete this thread)

The planeshift3d.com alias often has some stupid problems.  Use the real URL:  planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard

Hmm... switching to the real URL usually fixes most problems.  So, you must have something else going on...

I am experiencing the same problem - I can\'t browse PS forums using Firefox, when I am connecting from my home, but it works perfectly at my workplace (the same notebook, the same os, the same browser, different internet connection). I haven\'t any problems, when I use Konqueror or other browser though. I think it can be an effect of two facotors: the way of cookies handling and the presence of transparent proxy. The transparent proxy (I can\'t bypass it) caches only pictures, the html part of page is send directly to my machine. For the forum server it looks like two seprate machines were connecting, so probably there are two separate php sessions, two sets of cookies etc., and Firefox probably can\'t handle this. The result: I can see the main forum page and search results, but I can not load the contents of threads. I must wait several minutes (until php session expires?) and then a page can be refreshed.

I used to have exactly the same issue as well - here is how I fixed it:

open firefox - in the address bar type :about:config

use the search filter at the top to type     proxy

that cuts the list down a bunch.  Now in the first one in the list:

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy  modify the value from 4 to 8

THEN

make sure that

network.http.proxy.pipelining     is set to true (this speeds things up anyways and I always turn it on)

THEN

network.proxy.share_proxy_settings   change this one to true as well.

That should make things work well - it did for me anyways

No, it doesn\'t help. And I\'ll tell You, why. As I wrote, there is transparent proxy between me and internet, so browser does not even know, that there is any proxy on the way. Changes in proxy parameters won\'t help. Currently the only way for me to use Fiefox to browse PS forums is... to turn off loading of pictures completely  (because that proxy caches only images). Never mind, I can use elinks as well ;).

cough cough I should have said I was having the same symptoms and here is how I fixed it :D  I don\'t know crap about transparant proxy and I don\'t have the energy to google it tonight anyways lol :)  If someone else is having similar issues - I.E. your PC works fine in one place and not in another.. try what I said - if not lol elinks is perfect! though I don\'t see alot of difference it its rendering as compared to lnyx.

Also, another issue is that for some derned reason, none of my pages actually finish loading most of the time... and at the bottom of firefox is \"connecting to sourceforge.net\" or something which is weird because I don\'t know what would be on sourceforge...

It is that small SourceForge logo at the bottom of the page. Sometimes It needs lots of time to load... I suppose Sourceforge is very busy site :) Or it is just another symptom of the same issue.
