Map making
« on: November 19, 2005, 09:29:02 am »
I was just thinking about map making, and I had the following idea. If someone else has already thought of it, then sorry.

Players can draw a picture of a place (e.g. The sewers) on a piece of paper while they are exploring it, and then open up a paint program (or it could be all done in-game) and draw the map (yes, by hand). They could then use this \'image\' and put it onto parchments that cost, say, 1 tria, from a merchant and can then trade or sell the map to other players. I realise that this could be difficult and possibly abused, but if someone puts a lot of time into their map/s, they could probably sell a lot of them and make a lot of money, whereas if there maps are bad, very few will buy them.

What does everyone else think?

Chances for abuse are simply way too high.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Yea, I thought that might be the case. I just thought that it\'d be cool to use a \'real\' skill and not just some auto generator or something.

Not sure if using real skills for role-playing game is such a good idea either ;)

Maps that get generated by themselves!

How\'s this idea:

You buy a piece of plane paper from Hydlaa. One paper sheet can hold map for only one city. Now you right click on your piece of paper and click \"start marking\". Now you run here and there and the map will start recording your moves. This way you\'ll know where you came from, and where you are.

When finished, right click on the paper and click \"stop marking\". Just as you click \"stop marking\", the map will be drawn on the paper, showing your journey.

At least you\'ll be able to return to the original place where you started, if not anything else!

Mind you, the paper may also be \"autorotated\" so that if you look to 20 degrees north, the map will also point that way, so that it\'s less confusing. If this option can\'t be implemented, a compass may be bought from some vendor in Hydlaa to complement the map you just made yourself.

This idea could be great but it has to be done with a skill. I mean how you describe it, anyone would be able to make nice map.
We can add two factors related to some skills :
- drawing\'s precision (at the beginning it would be mainly thin lines and  approximate square for houses)
- orientation\'s precision : let\'s say you are running and turning 30? left, it will be recorded as 30? left only if you have good skill.

That would be a  possibility but we have to keep in mind that a map generator is no that easy to implement if we want not everybody to have map. (And personally I don\'t want i.e. Google Earth is only in the real world :D )

Your help is welcome!!!
