Why do you have to make everything so hard?

It\'s not ruined, it inspires more RP, and less PLing

They will be up when they feel like it... and also provding you have money and exp you can train with many of the citizens you see around, just target one and use /train

You need to have training before you can mine.

Some quests also work but i think all of them require you to either mine (cant be done for newbies) or kill stuff for loot (also cant be done at times)

So this means...Role Play \\o/

Though to mine you need training... which costs money. you also need a pick costing money. therefore you cannot mine without having money and also exp. Both of which you get first off from killing.

Easy fix. IMHO it should be done like this...
Every newbie from now on, till the NPC client is fully operational again gets: a pick, 5 PP and a couple hundread Tria.

Problem solved  :]

Or they could just wait and roleplay :P Explore, make friends. Maybe find out where and what to mine and where and what to fight, when NPC client will be back up. Adding content to make up for bugs and errors and problems shouldn\'t be the way to go - we need to have patience for those problems to be solved.

Purposesly downing the NPC server
« Reply #10 on: November 25, 2005, 01:57:29 am »
I understand that the NPC server is down on many occasions because there are technical improvements in game going on requiring shut-down of NPC activities.

But I have observed a side-effect of this, just as it has been rightly pointed out in this discussion above, that it really promotes people to interact. I\'ve seen many people just chatting in Hydlaa Plaza about themselves, Role-Playing among themselves, and some of them even gamble! A second side effect of downing the NPC server is that one gets to mine a lot of diamonds without having to worry about getting killed! :) A third side effect is to explore new areas, again without having the fear of being slashed by a monster!

All in all, I would recommend the developers purposely down the NPC server in an RP game to stimulate RP, which is in fact the real purpose of the game! ;)

RP (tangental topic)

I understand that this game is heavily role playing based, but there are a lot of people that want to role play the \"monster killer guy (gal)\".

Kidding aside, roleplaying will take place as people get comfortable with their characters.  Unfortunately, killing monsters and exploring are the first steps in feeling out exactly who these new personas are.  One often finds they are ill equiped as a low level whatever and begin the leveling process in order to feel more secure about themselves.

If there were no perceived need to level up, more role playing would happen as people would feel safer in their \"virtual skin\".  After all, it isn\'t exactly fun to run back and forth from the arena to the blacksmith to the guy that trains sword, back to the arena....

But, in the above process, you meet people.  Some you help, others help you, some you fight, some fight you, etc.  These are the beginnings of relationships, which will grow with time and lead to the types of \"quests\" and roleplaying you \"pure role players\" dream about every night before you lay your heads down to sleep.

But you can\'t expect everyone to just walk up to the \"circle of waiting\" (waiting for the NPC server, you know the one, it\'s in the Plaza) and start role playing with \"strangers\" especially when we all \"look\" the same and are only distiguished by the little green letters above our heads and the stats we get when we right click.  There\'s \"trust\" you must consider also.

I mean really, do you have any interaction with the people on the street as you walk by them on your way to the store?  I don\'t.  I hardly notice them.  I\'m usually all about myself and getting the items I need to make my life more comfortable (or whatever).  The only people I have interactions with are those I work with, party with, or study with.  And in the beginning I had no interactions with them until I got to know them.  That\'s how it is on PlaneShift as well.

Most of us will be right there role playing with you as we get to know you. Maybe even planning the expedition to retrieve \"the heart of the Rassin\" to save your sister cursed by the sinister Ceril Terpik over a mug or two.

I agree that role playing is very important to PS but with all due respect i would say half would fit into this equation.

patience+newbies/noobs=bye bye PS.

As I said some time earlier today in another thread, if someone doesn\'t have the patience to stick around and explore and perhaps find something to do besides slash at things, they aren\'t likely to enrich the community, nor do anything truly helpful in a tech demo. So no loss.

If you only want to /role play/ a hack&slasher there is no point in whinning about PS NPCs being down for an hour or a year. It takes only a few minutes to google, download and run such games.
