auto updater
« on: November 26, 2005, 06:36:47 pm »
I think that instead of having a seperate updater you have an updater that runs everytime you load the game.
this could work the same way as the normal updater but
trigger on opening and do it\'s job then disppear(recovery updater would remain the same as it is because it \"recovers\" files and this always takes a long time) i want this because
a) my current updater doesn\'t work.
b)this would be useful for the laziest of us (myself included)
c)it would stop people complaining they can\'t play when they haven\'t run the updater and are no longer recognised due to software changes
d) senile people would get to play to even when they forget to run the updater(no offense to senile people just sometimes you forget to run the updater)

Well I only see one thing that was wrong with all of that. It takes a good amount of time for the updater just to check for updates and then it takes a little bit of time to load the game. Add those two together and people would start complaining that it took TOO long to get into the game. I think that maybe they have it so when you start up the client instead of the ok button to connect to server it says \"update\" if you need to update for the new files?

I see your point, however i know of certain solutions to these problems, updater loads checks certain url for new links(downloads) checks names of links(named after files) against file names finds a link with no file downloads, this process of name checking sounds like a ram consumer but believe me it\'s not compare a gui to a text based game, which is easier to run? do you see my point?

When I run the normal updater, I get the \"time-out for loading world\"-crash. After updating I always have to update in recover-mode. If the updater runs automaticaly, I could never come online again.

Or just have it able to run both ways, not a toggle option, just have it able to use both ways no matter what. problem solution improved :)
