Difficulty with knowing who..
« on: November 26, 2005, 10:46:59 pm »
Am I the only one who has difficulty sometimes knowing if somone is roleplaying or not? If someone is abit abrupt and sounds mean (or visa versa) I have difficulty with knowing if its just them or just their character.

So am I the only one who has this difficulty?

Yes it is, sometimes  :] I usually expect everybody be IC, but still wait what they say. If what they say is obviously OC, I go and look for somebody else.

Then it also depends where I am. At the Plaza in Hydlaa I am ready for a lot of OC chat. In the Kada El\'s tavern I assume everybody is IC.

In front of Harnquist is a sort of free zone, both is used. But normaly OC talk is in brackets:[]{}() or the odd**. IC  is normal.

Example of OC. [I live in UK]
Example of IC. I live in Hydlaa.        :))

It\'s a definate problem, but you can ~usually~ tell by the kind of language people use and the kind of actions they\'re using.  For instance, if someone kill steals from you using a glitch then tells you you\'re a jerk, then it\'s pretty clear that it\'s OOC.  If someone uses the /me command to give you a bitter glare, then it ~should~ be in character.

Most of us (*) agreed to flag Out-Of-Character talk by surrounding it in

( parentheses - mainly for side notes to explain In-Character reactions more clearly )

 or

[ brackets - e.g. for technical topics or anything really not related to In-Character talk ]

If a situation is really confusing, you can always send a friendly OOC /tell and ask for clarification. More often than not, a reply will clarify whether someone is acting like a dolt for the pleasure of it, or RPing.

Then ask him back OOC:

( How did you mean that? )

Or IC:

/me wonders if he meant it that way.

P.S.: Sure, a /tell is another useful way to ensure.

I\'m not so sure about that IC example :) As it is roleplay, whatever your character wonders is supposed to stay in his or her head, unless the expression on his or her face or the body language makes it extremely obvious.

Very true. It\'s weird sometimes when people gather into little private groups and hiss at anyone who tries to join. Unless the newcomer is being seriously disruptive with OOC nonsense, he or she has every right to wander over and attempt a conversation. The original group, if truly RPing a private scenario, could find ways to excuse itself, explain in an RP manner somehow, and wander elsewhere.

I know what you mean, Miadon. You\'ll have to forgive that instance. The mood was very dark and intense, and the sudden entrace broke what we had going.

Perhaps next time, stand back for a few seconds and listen. Then you might catch a bit of what\'s going on. That way, you won\'t accidentally run into something tragic that\'s happening.

I usually stand to the side when I come upon a group of people to listen. Or, alternately, I\'ll enter, say the tavern, and sit down by myself to have a quiet drink. That way, I don\'t break the mood, but I make it known that I am there.

Edit: Aye, Karyuu is right. Those in RP should be a bit more considerate for sudden intrusions. If possible, we should try to include them (unless the current RP is specifically for a small group of certain individuals, which ours was not last night.) I apologize, Miadon, if I was rude or inconsiderate in any way.

:D The way I see it is if your not sure if the person\'s are role playing.....just ask. Most will tell you if they are in charater or not. I do have to agree with TheMinority though. Sometimes I have been role playing a heavy story line and have people come to interrupt which breaks the whole mood. So standing back and listening in to the conversation is a good idea.
I've been outside, it's overrated and the graphics suck!

Another problem is that we\'re playing imaginery characters but as people we have real egos.  People ~do~ have their own personalities and flaws, and they can come out during RP.  So how do you react IC to a personality flaw of the person behind the character?  You can\'t really.

The private tells are the best way to find out and you never know they might need someone to jump in and play a role you could be suited for your character :D . I have done that and it is most fun ;). IMO if you stand back you may get in the way but I cant see anyone getting too mad cause its just their OWN fault. They must expect anything to happen... keeheehee this is ps after all and it is filled with many different types of characters ;)  Also you may try asking around in ps to find out who role plays and who doesnt. I wish you the best of luck Miadon :D
