OMG OMG!! Newb (namely me) Doesn't know how to Mine!
« on: November 27, 2005, 07:15:25 pm »
I have heard about mining on the forums, but can\'t find any info on HOW to mine, i.e. where can I find ores and where can I buy pickaxes?
In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made quite a lot of people very angry, and is widely regarded as a bad move.

When the server is back up, and you are online in-game, try asking others for help as part of a role play like

\'Excuse me sir/madam, I hear there is money to be made mining, where might I learn how to and buy the tools to aid me?\'

you will be pleased with the help you get.

Perchance you might notice all the other people running around the various streets of Yliakum or hanging out on Hydlaa plaza...

...Ask them.

Okay, I get it. I will go to the Plaza and talk to people. Hopefully they will help. :)

And I will not post like that again.

Not necessarily. I very politely asked folks around the blacksmith, as well as around the magic house. The only answers I received were IDK or no answer at all. I asked an advisor in-game & was told, among other things,  to \"read the forums\". [seriously]

This is the \"newbie help\" forum right? No one is asking where to get the +5 Vorpal Sword, just how to mine. For me specifically it is to know \"how to know\" where exactly to /dig. (not the general area, that can be ascertained in-game, although \"north of plaza\" is pretty weak w/o a compass or a sun that actually crosses the sky) Is there a marker? Is there a mine? Is there some indicator in-game that should make it obvious assuming some effort is put in to finding said indicator? Just the right direction, not the whole solution.

Helpful hints help. I\'m not trying to be rude, but the \"ask people ingame\" answer is used ad nauseam & is oftentimes roughly equivalent to \"go ask someone else\".  Some questions asked here are not a  +/-  to roleplaying. Asking someone \"how do I dig up ore\" or \"is ore designated by a rock pile or a cave\" in-game isn\'t roleplaying, it\'s requesting help with the form and functionality of the game. I believe it belongs here.

*cough* there are books ingame >.>

Such as the one Harnquist has handily next to his store of picks and suchlike... You might find some hints there about where to dig, as well as info on the actual command to use in the planeshift guide (which ships with the client, and is also available at http://www.planeshift.it/guide/en/)

I agree with Bear. I spent two nights (Say hours) Trying to figure out how to mine. Then I tried to find iron. I wasted countless time asking people\\advisors and was finally told that there wasn\'t any iron implemented yet and to get a new quest. [Don\'t know if that\'s true]
It\'s the first quest suggested in the player\'s guide i.e. for new people to the game. It should be explained better so you can learn how Planeshift works. Otherwise most people will get frustrated and not bother playing anymore (I almost didn\'t).

P.S. My response when asking how to mine was usually \'Go talk to the blacksmith.\" And the book doesn\'t acually tell you anything helpful except where to find gold, which you can\'t dig up at first anyways. Nor is the /dig command in the online player\'s guide. I know, I went through it five times looking for it.

Back to the topic at hand, which wasn\'t fully answered...

To mine is easy, as long as you know how, I agree, it\'s difficult to find things out in the game and in the forums, have no fear! If you need ANY kind of help, just PM me.

To mine:

When you go to Harnquist (blacksmith in the Hydlaa Plaza) and you train mining, you will notice the bar with yellow/red areas. You need to fill the yellow bar by training with progression points (turn it green). To view progression points, or PP, click the information button. To get your first amount of PP, kill rats in the sewers. A lot of people around the plaza WILL tell you how to get to the sewers, mainly because it\'s so close.

After you get a good amount of PP, and you loot rat eyes, skins, and tails, and sell them to Harnquist, buy some mining training. Once the yellow portion of the bar is full, then you must buy a pickaxe. It costs 100 from Harnquist.

To get to the gold mines is simple. Look towards Harn, with the fountain behind you. Go right, past the road to the arena is another road, follow that all the way to the Hydlaa gate. Keep going past it, when you get to the split in the road at the forest, take a right. There\'s a magic shop there. Look towards the shop door. Then look right, you\'ll see a tall rock and a bankment. That\'s the mines for gold.

Equip the axe in your right hand and type /dig gold

GOOD LUCK! PM me with any questions you have.

Iron is minable in the Laanx dungeon mines, and out on Oja road.  Actually finding the spots isn\'t easy, if you don\'t know where to look.

Thank you sir, that helps a lot! and thanks DaveG as well. I too wasn\'t sure whether the \"iron\" quest was fully implemented, now I can jump back in & try to finish it up.

PlaneShift is not a game as yet - it\'s just a tech-demo! But I am truly exhilirated by the enthusiasm people are showing. When I started playing PlaneShift, I was anxious to kill monsters, earn money, and level up. But soon I discovered that PlaneShift offers more than that. It offers true roleplay, whereby you assume the role of a warrior (or a peasant or whatever you like) and talk to other people as if you really were what you intend to be. For example, look at this conversation between two game players:

(two dwarves suddenly discover each other in the dark dungeons beneath the Laanx temple):

Rakshak: Greetings fellow dwarf! You look perplexed! How may I assist you?
Fellow: I would like to mine some diamonds today!
Rakshak: That\'s a good idea! Why don\'t you join me? There\'s nothing like two dwarves digging diamonds together with their strong axes!
Fellow: Sounds good to me!
Rakshak: Follow me!

(After reaching the diamond mining site they start digging for diamonds)

Rakshak: Today is not my day! I\'ve been digging for half an hour, and just two diamonds have come to my share till now :(
Fellow: I\'m lucky! I got 6! :P
Rakshak: That bodes well, my friend!
Fellow: My mining abilities descend to me from my father
Rakshak: Well said brother! He must be an excellent miner!
Fellow: Yes he was! He was the best known miner around until three years back, when he died under mysterious circumstances
Rakshak: Oh I\'m so sorry! But bright souls often have short lifespan! That\'s the way of the rites!
Fellow: He was such an excellent miner - he could find minerals wherever he wanted to...

(they continue talking like this)

This is what roleplay is all about! And believe me, as a newbie I was so eager to kill monsters that I did not even think that roleplaying could be so exciting! I strongly advise all newbies - if you are new to game and want some help, try to ask for help with some bit of roleplay. Try to portray yourself as a roleplay character, and treat others with honor and respect. I got all help from in-game characters. So can you!
