is the naming policy enforced at all
« on: November 28, 2005, 10:01:31 pm »
i read the naming policy you have chosen fothe game and support it whole hartedly.  however i am beguining to wonder whether or not you actually enforce it.

let me give you a few examples of what i mean.  right now there are several players using names which are obvious breaches of this policy and yet they go unchallenged, just a few of therse include;

Huew Janus
Ihavee
Ziploc Freezebag
Memorex
Bartsimpson

whats the point of having a nameing policy if you dont enforce it?  i know for a fact that some of these players have been online for weeks if not months.

sort it out someone

Please report players with these types of names to GMs via the petition system or email or PMs.   We cannot verify every single name so we need to be informed of names that do not fit the naming policy.

Send a petition with a renaming request, and GMs will get to it ASAP. Do be aware that they do not notice all inappropriate names, nor do all inappropriate names get reported by others. There are some very clear violations within the list you have posted, so it should be taken care of. However, an in-game petition is likely to be noticed far quicker than a post on the forums :)

Yup. It actually is enforced by the way. GM\'s do find you. My old name was Yeti, I liked it, but GM\'s didn\'t. It\'s a cryptid so it wasn\'t allowed.

Also, while you petition, you can PM the player with the name. A lot of the time they\'re new comers who don\'t know about the rule and what\'s allowed etc.. Let them know it should be either deleted and create a new one, or to contact a GM to change it.

GM changed my name
« Reply #4 on: December 02, 2005, 10:08:00 am »
I had some fancy name which the GM didn\'t like, so he changed my name. I didn\'t like the new name either. So I thought of one of my own names, and he changed it for me. The entire process took over 2 hours.

first off, c-2501, GMs with renaming powers arent online 24 7, so we dont see all that drop in and therefore miss a few that should be renamed. like the others have said if you think you see someone with an unsuitable name just make a petition and someone will get around to it soon.

also: Archon, i would leave that part to the GMs incase people go getting angry
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

You being serious, even my longest renameing session took maybe 30-45 mins and that was because it was my first one ever.

Just as a side note, if anything the Name Enforement is the MOST enforced bit i look upon. I now just say \"Change it now or i\'ll do it for you\", simple. Now my average name change time may around 5 mins at most.

I think I have an idea of why they are doing this. Planeshift can get in trouble for names which are copyrighted. COPYRIGHT is the key word. LISTENING is the verb. DOING WHAT YOUR TOLD is verb #2.

so you\'re saying that the players with these names are purposely naming themselves that in order to sabotage planeshift and cause it to crash and burn? wow... that\'s a new one.

couldn\'t it be that they\'re just kids, or they don\'t know any better? that or they\'re just obnoxious and stubborn.

Yes, they are enforced strongly. I know first-hand of this. Gm\'s will comment and change your name in a heartbeat.

Names are not eligible to be protected by copyright. They could conceivably be a registered trademark, but for this they must have a degree of uniqueness and originality.

The idea that some dreaded \'name police\' is going to smash in your windows, kick in your door, and drag you away screaming for mercy in the middle of the night is rather silly. I imagine that the Planeshift team would rather have their own world with its own unique themes and flavours rather than a realm peopled by Raistlins, Drizzts, Gandalfs, and D34DLY-D34DLYs.
