role-playing blind characters?
« on: November 30, 2005, 05:29:00 am »
Once we can edit our characters to look like they\'re different ages, once we can edit facial hair, eventually some of us will play as very elderly people.

And at least some of the elderly people we walk by will be blind.

So, rping a blind character?  It would open certain doors.  There are games out there where it\'s an option to have such a disability, I played one futuristic RPG where you could even be paralyzed from the neck down but have major bonuses to intelligence and psi abilities.

So the question and seed for discussion, would anyone in their right mind do such a thing - RP a blind character?

Someone already does I think, though I can\'t currently recall who. His character\'s eye\'s bleed and are bandaged.

Bleeding that doesn\'t stop?  That can\'t be healthy.

Indeed, Tybalt played a blind warrior monk ... similar to the Zatoichi (blind swordsman) legend, if I\'m right. I think he fixed it by having other superdeveloped senses that made up for his sightloss.

We just need an opposite command to the \'relight map\' one if we want to walk around blind. :p

Well, there was that \"darkness after joining\" bug; it made me feel like I was blind -- I suppose you could create an effect like that for blind characters, and prevent all character/item name tags from being displayed as well...  Suppress the \"look\" icon from the right-click menus of all characters and readable items...

Or just RP it, and save the programmers the hassle.   :D

Zatoichi wasn\'t actually blind inthe movie - he had traveled far and wide and had beaten everyone who posed a challent - no one could touch his skills.  So, in an effort to hone his other senses, and add some challenge back into his efforts he wore glasses or something and kept his eyes closed or patched (I can\'t remember been a long time).  He lived blind for so long that his other senses became finely attuned and he was still an invincible swordsman....

And yea - rping a blind person could be neat, but nothing besides some charcter creation options for making a blind looking character are needed.  You can\'t use your other senses ingame, like smell and touch, and sound isn\'t \"real\" enough to attune to as well.  Thus, one simply needs to play his character in a way that is partial to his handicap.

Blind PC
« Reply #9 on: December 05, 2005, 05:13:07 am »
I have played a blind character in a role-playing game.  The background story denoted an ascendency past the blindness(blind but could function without sight).  I would also have liked to have roleplayed a freshly blind character that was at an extreme disadvantage.  I do not see roleplaying as being the biggest, the baddest, or the smartest.  I see lots of people do that(not true serious roleplayers though), these \"power players\" as I call them usually ruin an otherwise enjoyable experience.

As it has been stated, roleplaying this game could entail nothing more than just standing there talking to people.  It would truly make the world richer to have the planeshift equivalent of old men sitting around a fire talking about the \"good ole days\".  A blind person would further enrich the atmosphere of this game, especially if it was a PC, not an NPC.

In other word, I\'m all for it.

Challenges come in all shapes

I would play a blind character!  Why?

1) It\'s different.
2) I would have fun learning how to deal with it in game.
3) My ideas of fun might differ from someone else\'s.

Thank you for asking!

A lot of reasons.  It would be a challenge.  It would be different.  It would involve a whole new way of relating to others and the world around you.
