Well, at least your own character should be animated properly. :)
And yes, there are character animations, but not all characters are completely animated, i.e. you see \"moving Statues\" sometimes. Other characters (=all except your own) are animated, too, but you don\'t always see that, becuase (probably due to performance issues) the animations of other characters are reduced somehow.
Maybe one of the devs can give more precise information about the animations.

Knowledge is power, if you know how to apply it.

Yes, there is a bug at the moment where when  a player is running you see them in the wrong animation.  It\'s on the todo list to fix and should be fixed when next patch release is ready.

On a slightly related note, I\'ve noticed that the further away a character is, the more frames are dropped from their animations.  I presume this is a LOD optimization; is there any way to tweak the client settings to provide smoother animations at greater distances?

That is an extremely odd issue. Try:

going to http://www.ati.com and downloading new drivers for your videocard.

Make sure your color depth is set to 32 bit
Right click any open spot on the desktop --hit    properties then go to the settings tab - make sure color depth is 32 bit - PS performs poorly in 32 bit.

Make sure no firewall is running.  I\'ve had some odd issues with firewalls and planeshift, and though I can\'t really tell why the issues were being caused, disabling it (in my case Firestarter) helped alot.

Make sure you don\'t have some weird always on anti-spyware thing running - in fact its best to close everything you can before running PS. Its kind of an intensive app.

Rerun the updater with --auto (also known as fail safe mode)

if you are still having issues, delete the data directory and rerun the updater once again.

if all else fails try creating a new xp user and loggin on as him/her and running PS.

Alternatively, you may try running planeshift setup, and switch off 3d vertex buffer if it\'s on.

I experienced this same issue.  It was resolved by cutting off 3d vertex buffer as rakshak suggested.  Now I see my own and others\' animations.
