What Do You Expect from a MMORPG?
« on: November 30, 2005, 06:03:43 pm »
I have to ask. Some people expect combat, lots of looting, PvP, guild warring, and crafting. What are your expectations, especially regarding Planeshift?

The biggest part of the above for me would be crafting. If there\'s no crafting, there\'s nothing much worth doing to stimulate a healthy player economy(except for loot selling, but endless farming for pure loot gets old fast).

A good variety of jobs/professions would foster RP between the various crafters/gatherers who depend on each other to create a final usable product.

Fun.  Period.

How to achieve that though: monster slaying, chatting, player economy, crafting, exploration, political intrigue, questions, puzzle solving, mystery solving, over-arching plots, nemeses, rivalries, and guild wars.

Of course, someone is going to come along and say \"NONE OF THAT IS RP RELATED, YOU NOOB.\"

You are right, crafting is one of the things that should come next.
At the moment there is too much combat and PvP, which (IMHO) is not so good for the atmosphere of a MMORPG. Crafting will make the people more independent from just killing and looting monsters and it will add a good piece of RP-possibilities to the game. :)

Knowledge is power, if you know how to apply it.

Definately agreed - /me waits imatiently for crafting.

Things that I expect from Planeshift:

1. Crafting
2. Visible armor
3. Large areas to explore and adventure
4. Large variety of monsters to interact with and/or kill
5. Decent contros
6. Extra Animations for Emotes and RP related actions
7. Ability to sit in chairs
8. Updating HP bar
9. Added variety of available skills
10. Guild structure not so rigid - i.e. only one person can be named the highest rank in a guild... not cool in a guild that intentionally has no heirarchy. (lol a bit personal I suppose for us CoV)
11. PVP areas - i.e. arena floor
12. water somewhere
13. Player owned houses and land to build up cities. and a banking system to boot.
14. Gosh so much more... I\"d go on for hours and make a boring list.

I expect an environment that can submerge me in a fantasy world and give me the feeling that I actually am my character. A game that will let me interact with my environment and my fellow players in as many ways as possible. A world with many choices and options, where you can do what you want and become who you want. Also a place where not everything revolves around fighting and killing.

But yes crafting would be an excellent start :P

Yeah, I\'ve got to go with crafting being the big thing for me. It\'s the part I prefer in most of the games I play.

At the very least, I\'d like to see more of the quests working. Having to kill rats in order to get started doing anything isn\'t all that great, esp. if it doesn\'t really fit what your character would do.

For me, its all about character customization and a breathing, iteractive game world. I want lots of character options, weapons and armor to make my character unique.  Alot of games try, but fail utterly.

Star Wars Galaxies was great for character customization, at character creation, and even had more options if you were dealing with a Master Image Designer who could monkey with all kinds of character looks, from hairstyles, eye angle/shape, length/size of nose, skin color, eye color, body build, etc. You get the idea.

But to implement it would require a lot of work by the coders, 3D modellers, and texture artists. We can still hope tho! :D

we expect nothing, but enjoy what is provided and RP away in our own little fashion...

but crafting and charactor uniqueness... and and and... [points to all the above...]  would all be nice... so as an when the DEVs develop - we will be here to enjoy it and use it in our little fashion...  lol

Keep the list goin! :P

14. Character customization
15. Weapon customization - not just crafting, I mean different looks for different suffixes and prefixes.
16. Ability to create shelves, rugs, etc.. for the houses of #13 XD.
17. Extra weapons, not just crafting, but looting, maces, bows, clubs, staffs, orbs, etc...
18. Boats, caravans, etc.. (buyable and craftable)
19. Buyable drinks from the taverns NPCs (specifically the Oja tavern)
20. Storage!!! A nice way to include trunks and so forthe (if a shovel can be un-pick-up-able, so can chests or storage trunks :P).

I brought it to 20!

Ditto for me. As Sid Meier put it, \"A game is a series of meaningfull choices.\"

Induane and Archon, this thread should be for what you want in a game, not for what you want in planeshift. We have a full forum section for wishes, and more then one for bugs. If everyone crowded this thread with what planeshift is currently lacking, then there would be no room for anything else :)

Archon ... you really need to start playing more again, man.

\"19. Buyable drinks from the taverns NPCs (specifically the Oja tavern) \"

That was done a while ago. Brado is selling various drinks now.

what i expect from a free mmorpg isnt really much...

from a commercial one i would expect the normal standard of features gameplay wise and graphic wise.
