It seems to me that the whole Linux side of this is stuffed, except perhaps if you are an \'expert.\'

The sticky on the main page gives an install that doesnt work, the \'Installers\' thread here gave something that seemed to work but I couldnt connect as the server semed to be down, then it claimed it was up but was to busy to talk to me, then I got to char gen and took some time to RTFM, by which time the server was down again.

Now I get the wrong version problem, the \'probems with updating\' thread gives some clues and a link to a script, that seems like it will fail, I have seen hundreds of error maessages so far about not being able to read or write to ~/.cvspass and messages about files found in discarded section, but I\'ll let it finish running and see what happens.

The current version of PlaneShift is 0.3.012.
I take it you installed the latest binary, which has 0.3.011 as version. The updater under linux will only update the art, not the game logic itself.

Unfortunately there is no binary package available for the 0.3.012 or even an update for linux, so you will either have to wait until it is released (Xordan, the dude who usually does that seems a bit busy these days :) ) or you will have to try to compile from source. How you do that is described under http://laanx.fragnetics.com/.

Make sure that you use CS (Crystalspace) and CEL (Crystal Entity Layer) from Oct. 6th 2005, 00:00 UTC and PlaneShift from around Nov. 22nd (After that date, the network protocol isn\'t compatible anymore with the public game server).
I am not 100% certain about that last date, so perhaps someone can find out the right date for you - either you wait here, or you join IRC on irc.freenode.com, channel #planeshift-build .

Xordans Installer Here  and the R4 patch will get you running.

If compiling from source then Planeshift date stamp is 2005-11-30 00:00:00

I have tried this way but after install, it was worse then before.

Now I try to compile it on my own from CVS

Sorry to hear that as I have literally just installed it on my sons PC and it went fine.

If you compile from source the Gentoo and slackware instructions available from laanx work best for me.

Good Luck and see you soon :)

The Install I use is posted here:

Note:  I had to change mirrors in order to get trepor.zip to install properly.  There is a posting on this somewhere.

You know, maybe we need a sticky with all the solutions to the problems we\'re encountering: a living document on how to install the linux version.

Because I had not deleted my previous installation (with the installer), I have now tried the steps described in this guide. Unfortunatly, I have not tested this installation yet because the CVS build is still running and I want first to wait until this has finished.
I hope at least one of these installations work. I will keep you up-to-date and post my results of both installs.

MANY MANY thanks for all your help and tipps you provided.

Hi all,

I now tested the installer version of my installation and it works fine.
I just followed the guide in my previous post.

So, MANY thanks to all of you for your help.
