I have some questions on artistic contributions
« on: December 08, 2005, 10:04:17 am »
Now I am not wonderfull or anything like that. Taken some schooling and have worked as a professional artist as a assistant for well known sculture, but my 3d experiance is very limited.

So I was thinking about contributing to your project..  I\'d like to learn more about 3d modeling, animation, and game making and contributing to your project would be a good start, I figure.

but aspects of the licensing doesn\'t make any sense to me.

You say that you want to own the copyrights to the art, which is fine.

But what does that have to do with the license?

Lots of open source projects have you transfer copyrights to them if you want to contribute. It\'s a very common thing to do.

For instance MySQL database releases stuff under the GPL and under a different license for people who want to buy their product for propriatory software. They require that contributers transfer all copyrights to MySQL-owning corporation.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF) requires that you transfer copyrights to them when you want to contribute software code to them or want their legal protections. And these guys are the hardcore of the hardcore when it comes to RMS GPL type stuff.

So what is the ultimate goal of the licensing?

I understand that artistic stuff isn\'t the same as code stuff... and even if the goal is to sell it, then that doesn\'t bother me as long as what I make remains free.

Maybe it would make sense to use one of the established licenses? something like http://artlibre.org/licence/lal/en/ ?

This would allow me to transfer copyrights to ABC and then for ABC to distribute the artistic content freely and still get credit due for it.

I guess part of the issue is a control thing. You don\'t want people to fork it.. which doesn\'t make much sense. Art stuff of this nature is rarely usefull from one project to another. Plus if you have artists transfer copyright then you could always change the license later and the people that forked would not own the copyrights to it.

Now I haven\'t made up my mind either way.. I am just curious.

Otherwise I still appreciate you guys making a GPL\'d game and all that. Thank you very much for doing that.

I guess you have read the license? It also explains, why this type of a license was chosen.

If you want to contribute, then the information can be found here. As far I know, 3D artists are really needed to the team.
