Installation question - correct method?
« on: December 14, 2005, 04:51:26 pm »
Hi, I\'ve been looking to install PlaneShift on my Debian box, but I\'ve found about three to four different ways to install. Some seem to be out of date, but are still available; there\'s a broken link for an installation script. I\'m not sure which I should use.

What I\'m getting at is there isn\'t an official installation method - a place that says do this: and lists what to do. I\'m a bit of a newbie and I\'m not sure what I need to do. Could someone list the number one best way to install with a detailed step-by-step guide.

(Something like:
1. download file xyz.tar.gz
2. tar -xvzf xyz.tar.gz
3. cd xyz
4. etc. etc.)

Welcome to the happy community of confused Linux users :)

I found this thread that may help you a bit: I just thought my instructions may help... .

As far I know, you have to download the official installer from the main web page and install it. Once this is done, follow the instructions in the Xordan\'s installer thread.

I myself have built everything from CVS sources, so that could be another option, if you have development tools available.

Thanks for the reply.

I downloaded and installed the official installer from the PlaneShift download page, all went smoothly. Then, I downloaded Xordan\'s installer, but after reading and answering all the questions and choosing where to install (right after it said it was ready to install) Xordan\'s installer quit on me and left a file called bitrock_debug.xml   I looked into the file and couldn\'t read anything there. I don\'t have any place to host the file either.

So, I couldn\'t get Xordan\'s installer to work, all permissions are set correctly as well. I\'m not sure what to do next.

Hi lokiin,
I have used the cvs and Xordans installer and found both to work well, with the installer being the easiest by far.

However I just used the installer and patches from here and did not have to use the one from the Planeshift.it page first.

Lancer, thanks

I tried using just the install from the page you indicated, but when I get to the screen that says ready to install and I hit Forward I immediately get a screen saying:

\"There has been an error. A debug file has been created at /tmp/
bitrock_debug.xml, please attach it to any bug report.
The application will exit now.\"

That\'s the same error I get when I tried to install using the file in the download section of planeshift.it  I\'m at a loss, I don\'t really know how to install from CVS.

Here are the contents of the bug file if anyone is interested:

Hi Lokiin,
Sorry to hear you\'re still having a problem as I can\'t understand the de-bug file.

Are you used to the CLI if so a good guide to cvs build is available from here and you can usually get some help from IRC on #planeshift-build.
Good luck in your attempts just remember it is worth the effort :)

I can\'t help you with the debug file either, but it seems that you are still using the 2.4 kernel. Might be that the Xordan\'s installer requires the 2.6 kernel, but I guess Xordan has to answer to that.

As I already mentioned in my earlier post, building from CVS is another option and it is not that difficult  :] . Follow the instructions in the build guide that Lanser gave or you may take a look at my own build guide here  ;)

I hope you get it installed in one or another way.

Thanks,

I tried using malverian\'s script in the \"Easy way to install PlaneShift\" thread. I\'m still waiting for the process to end, but then I think I\'ll try CVS.

Thanks again

A quick question about CVS, after it\'s done compiling can the source code be removed? I would rather not have so much space taken up with useless source code after the compiling is all done (if it\'s not needed that is).

In general yes, you can remove sources, but I suggest you keep them. Planeshift is in an active development and new versions come out every month. If you delete sources now, you will have to download them again in next couple of weeks. If you keep them, then you can just update your existing sources and rebuild.

PS. Use the Edit Post button to add new information to your previous post if nobody has answered to it yet ;)
