Mighty Warhammer of Squishy Heads...
« on: December 23, 2005, 12:33:34 am »

Lol Just a warhammer I was playing around with.  Texture still needs some work as there is a bit of stretching but not bad for a 5 minute UVW Unwrap job.

The shield is new as well but needs another texture pass as well since I don\'t have the edge trim textured so there is some stretching there as well.

All hand painted in photoslop by me.

pretty good, one thing though.....the hammer head is out of preporton. Its to small and the handle is too long.

I appreciate your comment but nothing has been scaled as of yet.  However in it\'s current proportions given the thickness of the shaft relative to the hammer head.  It\'s not out of proportion for a classic style medieval warhammer.

It is definitely not out of proportion, no. The usual warhammers used in fantasy games are the ones way out of realistic proportions actually ;) Their gigantic \'heads\' would make it impossible to wield realistically but hey in games we don\'t have to be realistic.

This weapon would be pretty balanced and very much like a real warhammer, like the artist said. Long handle for more force developement by swinging it and a normal sized head so it stays balanced which allows fluid, easier strikes. All the head has to do is pierce armor and/or flesh. Doesn\'t need to be large for that.

I completely agree with Zan. Most war hammers are outrageously out of proportion. I work with steel all day long, and that hammer would weigh about  ten to fifteen pounds, which is still pretty heavy to swing about all day. The only hammers that should be any larger than that would be the iron-bound wooden headed hammers, or the Helium Filled Warhammer of Hollowness (+ 10 to speed) ;)

Yep, it\'s in proportion.... if the head were too big, its weight and the force of the swing might just make it into a projectile weapon with very bad accuracy... The head would like snap off or something if the  handle was any smaller or the head bigger, or at least I think it would...

well in RL it would be in Preportion but what about a dwarf ready for battle??? dwarves want huge powerful weapons and dwarves are very strong. No matter how big the head or shaft i think a dwarf will still want to use it. And wouldnt it be hard for a short dwarf to carry something with a long handle when hes/she is running around swinging it all day, like i said before he/shes gunna trip sooner or later and then the enemy will swing the death blow. But thats my opinion

and like Zan said this is a online game, things dont need to be totaly realistic

That\'s a Targe so that Hammer is about 3 feet long.

Dwarves are not that much shorter than an average human and being extra stout they don\'t need to choke down their weapons.

All that would accomplish would be putting them at a reach disadvantage.

I think a dwarf wielding a heavy maul or sledge type hammer would likely be about a foot longer than the above hammer and with a larger head.

Wouldn\'t it be hard for a 5\' 6\" tall man to run around wielding a 6\" long claymore?  No.  Why would the long spear ever have been invented if people had an issue with tripping over their weapons.

Heck Gimlee\'s axe in Lord of the Rings came up to his chin.  So no I don\'t agree dwarves would want a 2\' hammer with a 20lb head.  Unless they were using it to forge weapons with an 20lbs would be way to heavy to swing all day.

Not bad, the textures need dirtied up a bit, and a bit less shininess, but othewrwise, not bad. I also suggest joinging the head to the shaft differently, as it looks a bit strange. Also, Gimli\'s axe, although stylized, is a perfectly realistic axe.
Warning: Prone to common sense.

I never said Gimlee\'s axe wasn\'t realistic.  Someone else commented I need to make the hammer shorter because it would be too long and unwieldly for a dwarf.

I used Gimlee\'s axe as an example of a dwarf wielding a long weapon.

As well I don\'t know any other way to attach the shaft to the head.  As that is the way 100% of every hammer and axe I have ever seen has been attached.

The top of the shaft is slightly larger and slid through the head of the hammer, or axe and then tapped into place.  Which insures when swinging it will not come flying off.

If you were to put bolts through the shaft it would make it easily split and break upon impact with something.

I agree the hammer is very clean and I haven\'t dirtied it up at all.  However if you look at the shield behind it you can see what direction it\'s going in.  As it is blood spattered, etc.

Hi

Nice work Trinx, I especially like the shield texture. With the little trims that you already stated yourself, they can be made great. :) Keep up the good work.
