In response to Link:
Many people are not brought speaking proper english.  It is not their fault and nothing shoud be held against them for it. It does not give you the right to think you are better or more intelligent than them or say \"speak like us or don\'t speak.\"
This is very similar to racism and could be raised to a new form of discrimination.  People in the past thought others were inferior because they looked different than the majority of people, which also cannot helped.  In actuality, the people who thought this were just narrow minded and ignorant.

People that speak different than us should be obused because we don\'t like it? hmmmm... sounds like discrimination to me

If you don\'t like the way someone speaks it keep it to yourself

Monocle judging by your response you have no idea what it is that Link is actually talking about. Especially considering his post directly before yours.

He is not complaining about those people for whom English is a second language he is complaing about those who choose to be lazy about it. He means people who use abbreviations where they are unnecessary and just plain nonsensical.

For the most part I agree with him although I do not mind the occasional \'d00dspeak\'.

How are we going to know the people who are lazy about the language or just talk with slang? I\'m not talking about people that know english as a second language either, I\'m talking about people who were up brought to use slang and weren\'t tought proper spelling.  Someone that says \"dat is coo\" should be brought to link\'s school and abused? What if they just talk and write like that?

Link said:

No, they should either speak proper english, or speak some other language.

Which applies to the above case too.   Maybe he should be clearer on exactly what he means, but saying speak proper english, spell correctly or be abused doesn\'t just include people who are lazy.

Ah.. interesting topic here..

I\'d have to say.. in a roleplaying game.. typing like that would be very confusing and annoying. For the most part, the improper typing/spelling/what-not has not really been this bad for very long(not like 10years or anything), so I\'d say that 85% of the people who talk like that have picked it up since they\'ve gotten online.  And, no offence, but if you had to take a GED or something of the sort, and if you had to type it up, and you spelled like that.. you\'d be screwed.

I\'m not really bothered by most, but the stuff that is done purposely, really gets on my nerves, and yes, I will/do ignore everything those people say. lol I do use abbreviations sometimes.. I will say \'ppl\' and \'tho\' and others which I can\'t think of right now.

Oh! But what REALLY gets me, is when people finish every sentence with words that have no bloody meaning what-so-EVER!! But anywho..(and wait, I correct myself, they aren\'t really words!)

A school to teach them in would be groovy. And I guess to some, learning would actually be a punishment. ;)

(And this post was long, but oh well! :) I don\'t post much on here.. so there. :P)

People use shortcuts all the time, and it does not mean they are lazy.  Sometimes its a matter of conservaing space and time.  What do you think contractions and pronouns are?
if you can understand: y r u going to the store?
why shouldn\'t it be used? or saying \"it\" instead of \"cabbage patch top hat\".
We are not writting formal papers and because someones uses shortcuts are lazy.  I could probably dig up a lot of shortcuts used by the people who said they said they hate shortcuts.
For instance, look at the shortcuts the admin vengeance and other people used on this thread: http://www.planeshift3d.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=2187&boardid=13&styleid=2.

I wouldn\'t consider them lazy. If people use a lot of shortcuts you can\'t understand them just ignore them or ask them to repeat more clearly what they are saying.  Abusivness in this case is completly unnecessary.

Something tells me this is a difference of opinion that will remain just that. Of course the whole grammer school concept is a joke reflecting the frustrations of those who would appreciate more effort.

I myself do not mind th occasional shortcut (Im repeating myself again...) but it gets irritating when it proves to be a constant. When it comes to saving time, well in posting boards at least you have plenty of time.

Occacionally shortcuts can be \'cute\' if you will but again only up to a point. Where that point lies is also a varied matter of opinion.

As for someone never having learned decent grammer, well there\'s no time like the present to learn ;)

I remember this IMVironment on Yahoo(some of ya may know of it).. it\'s the \"Verizon Wireless\" and it has a \"transl8\" option.. I played with it once with a friend until I couldn\'t breathe and was in tears from laughing. If you have Yahoo messenger, and haven\'t seen it, you should.

I have no problem with abbreviations/shortcuts, but there has got to be a limit somewhere. lol

I think the resolution here is everyone be considerate of each other.  If you use language you think is questionable whether on not people will understand it don\'t use it.  We don\'t want to decode ancient Hieroglyphs made by senor cabbage patches <----(insult when used in this case).

I didn\'t read all of what was posted, but most of it, and I noticed you said something about saving time? Well any good typist will tell you that not only does it take longer to type those letters, it might be about the same if you do it alot, then that brings up the fact that if you get used to doing it you will do it on formal letters. But It saves no time if you are a half way decent typist and it\'s a good habit to know how to type, so maybe you should go take some typing classes.

If its about typing fast, then just make some shortcuts like in (god I hate myself for saying this) Counter-Strike. LOL will be the most common thing, an auto change of lol to:

Laughs loudly

would be very nice. the numbers are so stupid, I say we have a prison, called \"the School of bad grammer and other obscene behaviour\" where they get tourtured for some days and loose all their money. Will there be Criminal records, if there will, a stay at the grammar school should be added to the fools record, preventing them from getting good jobs.

That might be just a bit too harsh, some people will mess up while typing, some people just need to learn. Only consistent \"Kewl D00dz\" should be punished.

Somebody who writes like that in a ROLEPLAYING game deserves to be thrown to a dragon/rancor/incinerator. On a chat board, OK. On a forum only very rarely (it\'s still a pain to read, but if your dyslectic or something, OK) in a ROLEPLAYING game, NO MOTHERF***ING WAY!!! It completely ruins the atmosphere. Learn to type or don\'t play! Some games require a monthly fee, others require you to learn to type properly, which would you rather? Also if somebody regularly writes dat iz vry Kewl u d00dz and n00bz in real life, then they need to visit a mental hospital.

Link, you are wrong about how good typists have to think about using shortcuts.  There is no way you can prove that. Just because you do, does not all good typers do.  I can type brb, without thinking about, when i writing informally.   I don\'t pause when i use something such as \"brb\", or \"lol\".   And it does save me time when i use them.  I know i can write \"brb\" faster than i can write be right back.  A good typist can hit keys faster in any order because they have memorized the keyboard so well.  So a typer, no matter what speed (mathematicall , the speed of the typer has no effect), will always type 3 letters faster than sixteen.  Also, i know people that are good typers and use shortcuts online.
When I\'m writing a paper i can type without shortcuts and without thinking too.   My usage of shortcuts has no effect on the speed I write formal papers at.

I have no problem if somebody does not type with proper Engish in a role playing game.  I never foget that i am playing with people in my time, in a fake, polygonal world.  Video games are not convincing enough.  Also, you have no that common people talked with proper English back then.  Most of them were not properly schooled and the English language has evolved greatly since then.  Infact, most probably couldn\'t wright.  The history gathered was most likely written by the intellicts of that age. It has no effect on my atmosphere.

Its more about how they act, not how they type.  If someone says \"brb\" or \"lol\" or \"g2g\" it is different than someone typing \"hey d00dz want 2 g2 th cave n fight?\"  Shortcuts in my opinion, should only be used:

A)-when they are being chased by a giant fiery dragon and cannot type well or they will die.

B)-when taking a long time to respond would seem awkward or rude.

C)-when on rushed by their parents/schedule to leave the game.  Then they can type \"afk\" (whatever that means, I\'ve never known) or something.

\"lol\" is still annoying though, in my opinion.  Better to use \"hehe\" or something like that, even if it sounds a little out of place.  If you want you can \"emote\".

Example:  *Laughs* , *Chuckles* , *Grins* , *Does a happy jig*

Dunno how that would work in a 3D environment though.  It would be really neat if you could actually smile or frown.

I completely agree with Aruneko!
Those are the appropriate uses for shortcuts!

That face emotion thing is a good idea too.  You should put that on the Wish List Board.  Maybe you could hit a button to make your guy laugh (with sound) and do a jig(or something along those lines).

1Ink\'2 School of Gr@m@rr will r0x0r j0 @11.
1337 to the People.

I have nothing really to add, but seeing now, this thread has evolved into a wide open discussion.
A while back, the PS team said something about selected gameplay(only some people get to play, due to funds, and costs*Whatever did happen to that?*) Anyway, this could be like the \"bar\" test that desided if you will be chosen or not. But yeah,
Abr. = YEAH, they rule.
1337 =  :(
