What should be downloaded is a disk image (.dmg) file. You should be able to open the file, which will make another icon on your desktop, and then drag the planeshift files from there to wherever you want them. Then you need to run the updater because all the files are out of date. Read the stickied instructions in the Mac OS section for details.
