Targeting yourself, making it harder
« on: December 31, 2005, 06:17:02 am »
I\'m not sure if it\'s in the bugtracker or if it\'s been discussed before...I can\'t find it searching anywhere....

I usually use the third person follow perspective and sometimes when trying to target other entities that are in front of me using the mouse, it can be hard to target that entity and I end up targeting myself.

Would it be possible to limit the \'targetting box\' for yourself so that you may only target yourself by clicking on your head for instance?

I hope I was clear enough...I can reiterate if necessary.
It\'s amazing how we can do things simultaneously, like talking and not listening.

Try this, suggested to me by zanzibar.

Go into shortcut >
Choose a shortcut that you will not use >
Right-click

type

/target next nearest npc
/attack (then number of attack mode you wish to use)
1 = bloody 5 = defensive attack

Name the shortcut and save

Hope this helps and didn\'t come off as patronizing. (I detailed how for those who do not know how, seeing as I used to be one of them.)

Nice.

Anyway, targetting oneself in a battle situation might be important for people who use defensive magic.

Goland\'s problem is not having a hard time targeting things for fighting in general, I think, but targeting anything - other PCs, items, etc. You can make a \"/target next player\" shortcut, however, and a \"/target next nearest NPC\" (does that work for items too? Can\'t recall) and assign \'em to keys, and that might work.

if you just want to target anything, that\'s where \"/target any\" could be usefull. The helpfile is supposed to mention that, but it was not uploaded properly.

if you only want to target the next object after yourself, add \"/target clear\" at the begining of the shortcut, then it will start from you each time.
player -> gm -> dev -> bum

From a usability perspective, shouldn\'t the mouse work without running into this problem?

Thanks for the workarounds though.

I also pointed that shortcut out because it is only way I have ever been able to attack one of the \"caged\" arena foes.  For items that are lying on ground, I have always just twisted until the item is beside me.  I\'ve never been in a rush, so I never felt the need to create a shortcut for items.

You should have /target clear (/target_clear?) as the first line, and you should also hotkey the shortcut for convenience.  You were close though.

Except that I\'m not sure you\'ve even addressed his problem!

My advice is to use mouse look more often so you can get a clearer target to click on.  The only problem with this is a possible stamina bug which drains your stamina substantially while looking around, plus it can be disorienting depending on the map.  Targetting shortcuts are very useful however, if sometimes distracting.  That\'s why I like to hotkey everything; it\'s less disruptive.

zanzibar:

read my post
\"Go into shortcut\"
\"Use a shortcut that you will not use\"

If he does this, he has a 1 - 10 key as a shortcut.

If you are going to start saying I did things wrong, make sure you are right about it first!

Second of all, I did address his issue: having trouble targetting things in front of him.  What I said will work.  What you said will work.

Now before you start getting all confrontational on me again, be warned:  I was new to forums in general and was taken by surprise before.  I am more than ready for you!  It was me that got you caught infiltrating my guild!  You start this crap again, and I will own you!

Fighting imaginary wars is just plain stupid.  I haven\'t \'infiltrated\' any guilds, and your behaviour -- your flaming --  is yours alone to account for.  And no, I\'m not trying to \"take you\", whatever that means.

edit: back on topic, the shortcut only works for the fist ten shortcuts or whatever, and personally I find that the default hotkeys are inconvenient.  I prefer using E, Q, and F for the most useful ones like attacking and health potions, and = for screen shots.  It\'s easier that way.

Mine alone to account for because you never hold yourself accountable for anything, do you?

I like the q and e keys, they are very handy.  I like the 1- 3 keys too.  They are convenient for me.  Now there are a lot of options for the thread owner to choose from.

Kythag... remember, less reactionary ;) If you find something irritating, take a deep breath, turn away from the screen for a few minutes, and try to think of the nicest reply you can. I\'m certain this remark was not necessary.

Less reactionary, yes.  I apologize to zanzibar for my actions.  I hope this will end any hostilities between us.

Warning, this post is offtopic.  If you\'re here for the good stuff, don\'t waste your time by reading this post.  I know that this thread has already gone off topic so I\'m not the villian, but if it still bugs you, feel free to shoot me a PM rather than continuing it here.

If by \"reactionary\" you mean \"polluting the board with flames\", your apology is still meaningless due to just how much crap you\'ve done both publically and privately, and I doubt I\'ve been the only one affected.  Further, you suck at making appologies.  Using the 3rd person?  That\'s weak.

As far as \"ending hostilities\", you have a really weird way of seeing things.  You\'re in control of your actions.  If you\'re going to be a jackass, moderators will have to get rid of you.  If you\'re going to be nice, you get to stick around.  That\'s how it works.  Capiche?

\"Be nice.\"  So simple, so easy.[/size]
