If you (think) you like poetry

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

http://www.okonlife.com/poems/

It\'s a classic, but I\'ve only recently taken it upon myself to become truly familiar with it.

I enjoy the literal translation (Shahriar Shahriari), but less so the \'meaning\' translation.  Fitzgerald\'s is more an adaption than translation, and is great also but contrasts the original intent in spots.

edit:

Here is a link to a good copy of Fitzgerald\'s adaptation.  It includes \"all\" 110 stanzas, in Fitzgerald\'s order.

Zanzibar, your inbox is annoyingly full :P Fix this.

Love the link! \\o/ Though I think y\'can\'t love poetry without loving Keats :) Well, here anyway.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

hmmm looked at the site and think it\'s kinda strange to see four phrases inteprated by six phrases.

Do like the poetry though.

Thanks Xordan. Well, I\'ll post here one of my recent poems. It\'s not my last, though I personally like it very much. Enjoy it.

There was once a tale about a girl
Pure was the word meant for her
Innocence was hidden in those hazel eyes
Eyes, which never cry

Her dark hair, covered by an aching mist
Her soft skin, her soft lips
Oh, and her look, her eyes
She seemed torn apart from paradise

Every night she went to sleep
The whole world for her began to spin
And with every dream she had
There was a new story awaited to be said

Every morning she woke up
Everything around her slowly stopped
And every dream she had
The reality sure met

With her ambition, the sun frozen would be
Haunted by an unnatural serenity
Full of life, full of grace, fallen into devotion
What she did, she did with passion

One day, into the gardens she went
There, a lot of time she spent
Until she got close
To a beautiful red rose

For the wind he didn\'t bow
The rain, around him, slowly turned to snow
He looked so perfect, so healthy
A rose sure born for the wealthy

An angel, a demon, maybe none, maybe both
The girl\'s hands where embraced by the sharpest thorn
When the rose she tried to get
And let her first tear to be shed

\"Do you hear the calls?\" Whispers the rose
\"Do you feel the inner pain? The shivers it throws?
It\'s your heart, its hollow
It\'s your soul, which has fallen in sorrow\"

\"You\'re a dreamer, your purpose in life is endless
Your horizons, your life itself, are endless
Though, you just miss one thing
And without that, one in vain lives, for nothing\"

For me, it was just a story
Written for the sake of glory
Said for a few moments which stopped the time
An ideal, an illusion, well kept deep within our mind

Though, with every chapter that passed by
My heart sailed towards the sky
Mesmerized by that single thought
That you?re the girl I?ve always sought

An unnatural serenity started to surround me
Facing the fact, that in my soul, that girl from the book you could be
And instead those never ending words
Every page, your image started to hold

It is possible that you could be a shadow of her?
I guess not, for most, immortality is just a goal
Even so, it?s said that one special like her, is born in a lifetime
Words that made me fly, thinking I have the chance with you to spend my time

I don?t know if happiness the girl from the tale did find
But as for me, I?ll always be by your side
Hoping I?ll never let you go, and that one day
?I love you? to you I shall say?
