human first attempt.
« on: January 01, 2006, 08:39:26 pm »
so I was bored  the other night and it was 11 pm and I decided to make a human in 3D.  so at 2 am I finished tweaking  and nudging and fiddleing and beheld the first and flawed human model.  it stands at 450 polygons.  http://img347.imageshack.us/my.php?image=humanmale0yb.jpg

comments and pointers etc are good, the newbie moddeler needs some help.

*I have decided  to make this thread  my art thread  so I wont drag anything back from the dead, but  I cant change the thread title, so if someone could do that for me I would be gratefull. *

Not bad for a first try :) I think the hips should be wider though - or the lower body in general scaled up to match the upper, since it looks rather unbalanced at the moment. I think he would need either a longer or thinner neck as well, probably the former. 450 polys is rather low, you could\'ve gone further with it ;) Like defining a bit the muscles of the arms. It\'s a good start, but it could be taken a lot further - I hope you do so! :D
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Very nice for a first try! The top is nice but a bit generic. Try using a reference for the stills. Definately agree with Kanyruu on the details issue. We\'ve all got nice fast adapters that can render millions of polys a second. Give your characters a better image as it\'s most likely what you see the most and also what other see you as!

Did You used the same technique as previously (\"another creature\") ? I think it won\'t work for human model. Human body is more complicated, you probably won\'t be able to create palms, fingers, foots, nose etc. starting from single cube.
If You can use Blender, try -> MakeHuman plugin. Yes, I know, the point is to make model from scratch, but it is a good reference and it saves time when you already can make human models by yourself (it does not mean I can do it ;) )

P.S. I missed Your reply last time, so here is the answer about decimator tool:
Blender 2.37a:
Blender 2.40:

yeah I made it all from a cube like you said too. the hands were kinda tricky and they were the last thing I was doing so for the moment I did the generic game thing (eg make the hands little out of shape cubes that sprout from the forarms.... ).
The  tutorials are much apreiciated. and thanks for decimator .  I recently updated blender  and I have lost the ability to import  my models from wings into it. I\'ll search round and see if I can find out the answer to that one.  and then I will \"decimate\" my creature. hehe, sounds optimistic doesnt it >.< .....

Hi

Nice, especially for your first human model. I agree with what Karyuu and Aklarand suggested. I like to use Blender\'s cut options (k-key in 2.40), with those you can quicky add more detail to limbs. Would be good if you can boost the polygon count to around 1000. Using background picture(s) there is a great help. They also help in placing ears and mouth, if you want those.

When the human form looks good, you can add some clothing detail, boots, shirt edges and such.

All in all, quite promising. Keep us updated of your progress. :)

to do with the creature
« Reply #6 on: January 02, 2006, 05:02:15 pm »
ok I lowed the face count on the creature to 500. saved the model in blender as I could not get it back into wings 3D, if anyone could help with this I would be gratefull, I can then play a bit more  with it finish it off etc. (I\'m not very good with blender)

I\'ll work more on the human, probably toy around with it a bit more  or  shape in  wings and then see what I can do with it in blender.
thanks for all the help so far.

Blender comes with Wings3D exporter, it should be accessible through menu: File-Export-Wings3D

Tested it and worked fine with me. Just remember to be in object mode and have the wanted object selected, before exporting.

I figured  it was probably a bad idea to drag the other thread up from the grave so yeah, here is my updatye on the creature I moddled. I fixed the back legs a little. ( the top was caved in kinda), and  its now 500 polygons :D

more shall happen on the human, and I will probably change this into my art  thread.
thanks for all the help you guys  gave me up to this point, helped alot with my advancement in 3D moddeling.

Argh... I take back my words... It has lost too many details, particulary the head. It is strange, I have reduced number of polys of my... alien... from 1472 to 300 and it did not loose the shape so much... Maybe it is fault of smoothing ? Or maybe your creature just needs more details ?
Well, at least You know the results of such operation, now decide: you like it or not :)

Ok, you guys have probably figured I had fallen off the edge of the earth, that or given up. Neigh, just biding my time.
So I have been doing a little bit of work on my things, I tried to make my creature\'s face a little more...\"featured\" , and I have tweaked the human some also added hands which I welded on.
