Map idea...thing....stuff
« on: January 03, 2006, 02:56:50 pm »
So yea....i was on IRC talking and this newbie came in asking the normal asortment of questions....

\"where am i\"

\"whats this do\"

\"i want to kill stuff\"

and so on..... then he asked about maps....there an idea struck

as far as i understand, there will be no direct map option, but i had the idea that you could have a semi usefull map based on the char\'s Inteligence and Memory....

The idea would work as a char with a low INT would say walk and make 3 turns in the sewers... as he makes the 4th turn the 1st turn is forgotten since he hasent the memory to remember that far back...

then take a person with a high INT... they would be able to navigate a fair chunk of the sewers before they start forgeting where they where....

also i guess you could add in that eventually if a char walks past a point so many times it becomes long term memory so stays in the persons mental mind as it where....

dunno just a random musing :)

Even a 3 year old can draw a map of somekind and it\'s a good idea for before you make a map, once you explored the area you will be able to draw a map.

Yeah, but what one wants isn\'t some kind of a map, but rather an useful one.

Said that, nice idea Sep. It incorporates using mental skills of your character (as opposed to the player behind it) and I believe there should be as many ideas like that as possible.

We could use reasons like \"a map isn\'t roleplay\" or stuff like that.  Closer to the truth is that we don\'t know how do a map yet :).    Right now the easiest option I can see is to do a map like WoW has and has 1 big \'page\' that shows your location in that area.

I think the tricky part is that our areas are not really to size so any map would probably look like an Escher print.

I\'m not against a map and think that a cartography skill could be useful.  People could sell their maps or if a player wanted to add inforamation to their map they could give it to somebody with the skill to add notes or other features.

Why do we need map\'s instead light\'s that go along a guarded safe path otherwise you can go explore around the forest and talk to naked tribepeople.

And why do we need candies instead of all sorts of fruits? o.O

I don\'t quite understand what your argument is supposed to prove...

Tossing ideas without arguing for them doesn\'t move a discussion forward :|

Uhm yeah, if you don\'t want to know what\'s behind a corner, just don\'t buy a map... I don\'t see any problem here o.O

I don\'t think we need map which will always show where we are. We need just a map, not in form of exact screenshot.

About Sep sudden idea ;)
If you wan\'t to make people life simpler and add char memory near the always existing player memory, then go ahead. This may be good idea.

The problem is because person which don\'t want to know what is behind corner, most likely also don\'t want others to have bonuses to knowing this faster/better. That person will feel pressure that to have the same chances, will have to buy map, what isn\'t fun in this case.

People are acually very tempted to know whats over, if there is a crowed of ulbers there they will try run threw them to find out why they are there. If they have the choice to take or just leave a map alone their going to take it because they need to know whats over there.

Are you suggesting not implementing any sort of maps at all? :P
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.
