Linux binaries waste of download bandwidth?
« on: January 07, 2006, 08:25:36 am »
I downloaded it last night, ran it this morning, and it doesn\'t even contain everything I need. It is missing some dialog program, but I didn\'t find any seperate download for a dialog program.

I AM NOT GOING TO INSTALL WINDOWS in order to be able to play this game.

Also SourceForge didn\'t offer any downloads there as well.

I remember when I had Mandrake, there was even a Planeshift rpm in the repository that worked.

Dialog is a system tool used to show dialog boxes from the shell and is not part of Planeshift. I don\'t know your distro, so I cannot give you recommendations, how to install it, but you should have some kind of a package handler that most likely includes it.

Yeah I know, the installer on the site sucks. I\'ll release a new full package with the next update which will have a much better installer.

I think it\'s a good idea. I\'m just a newbie in the game but i\'ve my share of experience with linux and still installing and putting the beast to run was a difficult task...

The installer needs to do some checking for what i\'m reading (on my box it did just fine).

If you think it\'s worth i can help making a rpm for the major distro out there (i\'m using mandriva but unless you are checking dependencies very tightly rpms are quite the same all around).

Well, as already said, dialog is part of most Linux distributions and can be installed with the package manager (rpm, apt/ synaptic,...). However, the name of the package may vary, depending on what distro you run. Sometimes it\'s called \"cdialog\" or \"xdialog\" instead of just \"dialog\".

Knowledge is power, if you know how to apply it.

Now I just installed the missing libsmpeg0c2 lib.

Now I just updated the updater and now I can\'t read it or see my mouse cursor when it is over the window.

I am not giving up yet, but this sure is one big mess. I will be glad to get it working and be in a mmorg again. I am running Kubuntu Breezy with the 2.6.14.5 kernel. (It was manually updated because of IDE/ATA problems)

I\'m using Kubuntu.  Downloaded the binaries, installed dialog via adept, got the R2 and R4 updates and installed them as per instructions, ran ./updater, allowed it to update and then launched the game.  It all works very well.

Maybe you are missing something along the way. The R2 and R4 thingoes?
