Things we know how to fix
« on: January 08, 2006, 05:28:45 pm »
This isn\'t a request for help, per se, but a request for past help.  I\'m updating the stickies here, and I\'d like the various tech-helpers here to give me some... well... help.  :P  In addition to the list of standard trouble shooting tips I listed in the main sticky, can anyone think of any others?  Also, I\'m going to make a \"known fixes\" thread (or just ammend the main one), and I\'d like to compile the list here first.  (no one ever reads the long winding piles; I want it locked)  Here\'s what I can think of off the top of my head:

GeForce 2 or 4 issues:
Edit the file data/config/r3dopengl.cfg and add these lines:
Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_rectangle = false
Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_NV_texture_rectangle = false

VFS errors:
Download correct vfs.dll (now recommended to be done via the updater1028.zip, in the updater sticky; however, this really only applies to people who download an old installer off of a P2P network, or something)

(I\'ve added the vertex buffer straight to the standard troubleshooting.)

Seeing as I can only think of these 3 at the moment, I\'d welcome some more ideas.  (only currently applicable issues, please; no old stuff needed)  Please read the latest versions of the main sticky and the updater sticky before commenting.

Something you might add to the updater sticky:
Some people have had problems with mirrors not working or being very slow. You can solve that by editing this line in updaterconfig:
You change the 1 to another mirror\'s number.

Above usually speeds things up for me, but updating can simply take a long time, especially when you\'re updating from a clean install of PS. Unless you\'re seeing the same file being download over and over again things are allright.

Also, most of the time when people have issues downloading planeshift, it\'s because they tried the bittorrent download en they don\'t understand bittorrent. Add a note that if you don\'t understand bittorrent you should really use the normal downloads.

If you add the Geforce and VFS issues I think you\'ve got allmost every issue covered but it won\'t hurt if you add an extra paragraph that says that the \"PS encountered a problem\" messages are usually fixed by disabling sound, people just keep making posts about that. It\'s allready stated in the main sticky, but you really should emphasize it.

We're not evil. We're simply amazing.

I outright disable all but the 2nd and 3rd mirrors, using by adding the !-- and -- to the other mirror tags.

I added the mirror tag info to the updater sticky, and put emphasis on sound in the other sticky.  I\'ll add the torrent recommendation to the beginning of this other section/thread.
