OOC, brackets and a shortcut
« on: January 12, 2006, 05:47:35 pm »
With fear and trepidation  I make this suggestion!
I did do searches under \"shortcut ooc\" and \"shortcuts ooc\"

I would very much like to see a new command entitled \" /ooc\".   Also I think it should be in the Shortcuts table.

This command would automatically placed brackets around out of character infomation.

I am frequent guility of not placing brackets under my ooc stuff and having persons send me message reminding me of that fact.    Sometimes I begin a message with a [ and fail to end with one or end with one and realize I failed to start with one.    And some of my messages can be long. :D

Learn to type better, or don\'t have large OOC conversations in places that shouldn\'t have them.  ;)

that seems a pretty dismissive take on a good idea, as though you want the poster to play the way you do. but wouldn\'t the game be richer if it accomodated different technical styles and preferences?

i like the idea, and second it. anything that speeds communication (especially while providing an opportunity to minimize mistakes) will enhance role-playing.

Actually I think that this will make explanations to newcomers much easier - \"Type \'/ooc text\' when you are speaking as the player behind the computer, otherwise everything you say is coming from the mouth of your character.\" However, that\'s all I\'d want to see. No \"OOC Mode\" shortcut that places parentheses or brackets around all the text you enter, until you hit the shortcut again. That\'s just making OOC conversations too easy ;)

This isnt a bad idea. I myself tend to forget to put brackets at the end. While few times I hear about people complaining it does get annoying when they do. /ooc would be nice, but an actual shortcut would, as Karyuu stated, would be too much and encouage more OOC chatting. This is an mmoRPg so RP must be encouraged. But hey nothings wrong with a little OOC every once in a while.

this post is merely to add mass to the prevailing oppinion. Anything that has the potential to simplify newb assimilation should be examined carefully.

Same here. We would all look more credible to new players.

It\'s unaesthetic and plot threatening to have OOC chatter mingled with IC, so a new tab for /say /ooc chat should be created.
The other kinds of chat are usually OOC, unless their use is explained with a /me.

I agree with Sangwa actualy, that seems to be perfect...would take some getting used to though, if somebody has to leave for a bit while Roleplaying and the others don\'t check the ooc tab(Where the person would have put the fact that they are gone)...that could end up funny.

Maybe adding the ability to put afk ontop of your name (I know this has been mentioned before, but that was mostly about dueling)

No OOC chat tabs! That\'s just inviting OOC conversations - a discussion about this has taken place before. There is no need to make OOC conversations themselves easier for anyone - but designating them with an /ooc command that puts brackets around text is alright.

Not entirely, because the OOC text would still show up in the regular chat window, and excessive OOC conversations in public places would still warrant a warning to the players carrying them out. The command makes it clearer to new players, however, that the primary purpose of PlaneShift is for roleplay - while a separate OOC chat tab designates OOC conversations as \"normal\" and \"okay.\"

What I would really like is an OOC color.  Like how when someone says your name it\'s a different color and you notice it?  Well this could either autodetect () or [] around a block of text, or would work in conjunction with the suggested /OOC command (which I think is a great idea).  This would make scrolling through conversations to remind yourself of what\'s been said and filtering out all the OOC stuff far easier, while stilll allowing OOC chat as the necessary RP facilitating tool that it is.

I see where you are coming from kary >.>

i didnt realise they meant a whole new tab, just a button that you click to put the [] in for you but still prints it out in the normal or all tab. which in that case is prolly easier to use a / command.

The addition of such command, as ralas said already could serve to add colour to the ooc sentence.
But while that can seem nice at a first sight, I don\'t see if it really would meet its objective. That is, ooc chat and ic chat are in the same tab (no doubt on that) when someone types your name, the sentence is coloured in a way that is easily spotted by you, the reader.
Consider that, with colouring, the ooc sentences would become more noticeable to your eyes, than the real ic ones (which are the important) you can say, well, I can edit the colour to another one, more neutral. That\'s correct, but lots of colours that could be chosen, don\'t go well with the default background (such as blue one, iirc) so that will lead to an almost unreadable ooc sentence (and some ooc sentences are worth being read, either way we could be missing important comments, or clarifications about the outgoing action, of the attitude of a certain char, for instance) that will lead to choose, I think, a colour such as grey, which could end so similar to the default colour one that it looses its purpose.

I personally think that, if someone doesn\'t type a \"(\" or \"[\" at the beginning of his/her sentence, it\'s even more unlickely that he/she will type /ooc (yes, there are more letters ;) ) while this last option would ensure that the resulted sentence has both \"(\" and \")\" for a \"visual filtering\" of ooc sentences, really the only parenthesis needed is the first one (which almost nobody forgets about)

EDIT: Smiles on were playing with some signs used. :P
