Are you sure you\'re getting all the files, when building? And have you updated your video drivers recently? The newer version may need a newer driver.

Also, is your problem anything like this one?

Your system specs and distribution version may help, also.. as the other thread like this doesn\'t seem solved, yet.
Someone else will probably get here soon, and hopefulyl they can help, as I have no clue about this.. >.>

Both are interesting problems, isnt it wonderful that things can break in so many varied ways just to keep things from being boring and stable? :)

I agree with Bereror in the other thread when he suspects that Crystalspace may breaking things or be broken itself.

Do you have different versions of everything ( not just Planeshift, but cal3d, crystalspace and cel as well ) all installed under different paths? I have related environment variables that point to where I have installed these components, maybe you need to update yours so that they point to versions of CS, cel, etc that match the version of planeshift that they were compiled against..

> echo $CEL
/home/user/planeshift-cvs/cel
> echo $CRYSTAL
/home/user/planeshift-cvs/CS

You could try running the updater in GUI mode ( ie with no -auto switch ), to see if the video works under it ( I assume it also uses CS ), then maybe try the CrystalSpace walktest program ( which loads up a demo world to showcase all of the snazzy special effects that the engine can use ) to see if its all working properly.

When I run it with the command shell here what it says

crystalspace.maploader.parse.image:
Could not open image file \'/planeshift/textures/snow.jpg\' on VFS!

crystalspace.maploader.parse.texture:
Couldn\'t load image \'/planeshift/textures/snow.jpg\', using checkerboard
  instead!

crystalspace.engine.warning:
Lightmaps are not up to date (lightmap format changed).
Use -relight cmd option to calc lighting.

I don\'t want to disappoint You, but it may be a reason of Your problem. Planeshift is rather demanding application. Could You post specs of your hardware here ? For example: You can find info about Your graphics card using the following command (case sensitive!):

lspci | grep VGA

about cpu:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

and memory:

cat /proc/meminfo
"Close the world, txEn eht nepO."

Radeon M6 is hopeless, even ATI doesn\'t support it :( Also 256MB RAM is not enough. Radeon M6 mobility with P4 and 512 MB RAM gives me 0.2 fps.
