The dungeons?
« on: January 18, 2006, 09:52:52 am »
I realy dont get it...

I jump down, sliding, landing on a softspot, I have full health.
So far is every thing its alright, but when I start to walk I die after a while.
I cant see any attack, warnings etc. The system log says nothing, exept when I die.

What is this, a bug? Or is the way from the temple just the wrong one.
Any tip/ Ideas are welcome.
Going crazy.........

Perhaps you\'re a new player? or at least a new created character?
If so, check this: http://planeshift.oodlz.com/bugtracker/bug.php?op=show&bugid=1427

I think there\'s something not working correctly with new characters, so they die at the first jump (after loading the map) while they shouldn\'t.
There have been reports of being able to walk before the system really realizing you\'re dead and starting to load the DR map (due to lag, or most commonly a serverside code problem, that is too slow to react) so that\'s why perhaps you think you\'ve survived, while in fact, you were dead already.
Are there any MoonSeekers left?

RAM is the memory that counts, not harddisk space - because programs run in RAM, not on disk.  ;)

just that 8gigs of ram is crazy and there is surely something better you could be spending your money on O.o

maybe your health loss is just not registering... or you are missing the drops that follow the initial leap of faith

editation: just read the second part of gag\'s post and he already put foward that point i just offered. o/
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

technically, with current OS technology as it right now, If you\'re not running a flavor of IBM, or a server designed OS, anything over 2.5 GB of RAM actually hinders performace.  Its more load on the OS to manage all that RAM than what its good for.  but hey, good thinking towards the future I guess.

and to stay on topic ness,  I noticed recently that when I die, the keys are locked now.  now, it seems if I try to move, it goes just a bit until it is senced by the server I moved and it places the character back in the exact same position when I died.  Which surprised me at first since it was only justrecently that it was put on that CVS thingy. (yes, thingy is a technical term)  not to go off topic again, but it looks funky with out a proper working death animation playing after death from a fall, plus, umm, the sit commands a little broken now.  all right, I\'m done.

Its working now!!
Dont now why a have not change anything.
Stilll Im happy:-)

Of topic, What are you guys talking about? Do some video rendering and see.
\"actually hinders performace.\" Sorry to say but this is just pure BS.

A simple test open Photshop do a high res, pict aprox 500mb add some layers.
Gone eat you 2.5g easy.
Or the real thing get a demo of  Final Cut Pro and do some rendering.

End of story

Thanks:-)

HA!  Hard to believe, isn\'t it.  You can have lots and lots of RAM nowadays.

But... I thought that 32 bit processors could only address 4 gb of memory? Of course there is the chance that you\'re using 64bit.

I\'d be interested to know what motherboard you have in there :P

Powermac G5 Dual 2.2 risc cpu Os X

I can adress up to 16g ram.
If u are on unix plattform u can create a ramdisk and run apps from there.

Intel x86-ISA 32-bit CPUs of i686-class and above ( ie pentium-pro, its successors and AMD / Cyrix / VIA / Transmeta equivalents ) are capable of addressing RAM in quantities > 4GB, even though its 32 bit address bus can only directly address 2^32 bytes/4GB of memory. It does this via a process known as PAE ( Physical Address Extension ), which gets the job done with a few limitations and caveats - one is being able to only address RAM segments of 2ish GB or less in size, so for example even with a 16GB ram system your Oracle database process cant have more than 2 GB of ram allocated to it. Theres also a performance hit as the kernel has to do extra work in looking up and mapping memory addresses in an indirect way such that it can address the higher RAM areas.

64 bit systems ( like a G5 ) dont have this problem, regardless of whether the OS is \'server grade\' or not. 64 bit windows on Itanium, Tru64 unix on 64 bit alphas, Linux on a G5, all should theoretically be able to manage large amounts of RAM without breaking a sweat.
